Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

Hi.
Is anyone having any problems with the Remote Procedure Call restarting there computers, 2 friends of mine have started complaining about XP just starting after 5 mins, no settings have been changed.

I was just wondering if this is a problem going round the net.

I know of a way too stop this, if you are having problems.

Goto Control Panel, Admin Tools, Service.

Then look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC), make sure u dont select the one with Locator next too it.
Right click, on it, then press Recovery, they all say Restart the computer.
Change this too Take No Action.

This has since helped my friends out, but this has not effected my computer.

I hope this is of some help.

yep it has been all over news - even tv for the last month or so.. amazing people didnt update anything anyways...

if you just do the recovery thing, you are still wide open to attack.

It is a very very very serious Windows exploit. People update your Windows installs, go to WinUpdate!

Goto Control Panel, Adminstrative Tools, Services.
Then look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC), make sure you DO NOT select the one with the word Locator next too it.
Right click, on it, go to properties, then go to the Recovery Tab. There should be 3 options, all of which that say " Restart the Computer ". Change these too Take No Action.
The computer will no longer reboot when this error occurs, now you can install the patch, and fix the issue with out formatting.

No, a better solution is shutdown -a at command line. You don't want to mess with RPC, it needs to be there, and if it crashes it needs to restart the machine (under normal circumstances). do the shutdown -a and install the patch THAT HAS BEEN AVAILABLE FOR A MONTH AND HAS BEEN ON MANY NEWS SITES AS A HIGH PRIORITY ITEM.

Keep yourself patched and firewalled or get the hell off the internet.

hehe Wink
I don't like firewall OK this may have been a reason to get one ... but only one ....

but I really "like" the virus .... it is not harmful but does show how important patching is ....

I installed SP2 beta this means any patch you try to install says NO NO so I just said to myselfe ... argh just wait for next SP2 ...... now I switched back to SP1 with all patches .....

but especially noobs will .... at least some ... will now take much more care of patches I think

I had

I had a virus like that had to do with the RPC thing. But the one I had would only let you on the internet for about five mins then it would reboot you're system. I never had any problems with Starting up my PC though.

Heres the link to fix the virus I had.

Hope it Helps
