Your G3 is probarly fine (120 fps is ok). It seems you have some background process running which takes your ressources (This can also be some of WinMe builtin features)

You will find a huge improvement by increasing the amount of ram to at least 256meg. Windows ME is quite memory hungry

Staying out of the loop: John Gatt has written up some information and a guide on how to avoid the nv4_disp.dll loop error

The error normally occurs under a Direct3D or OpenGL application, on systems using a GeForce 2 or GeForce 3 video card with WinXP and the Nvidia detonator drivers 23.11 or 21.83. There are reports, however, of the issue occurring under Win2K. There are also reports of this occurring with ATI video cards but this has not been confirmed by VIA.

OpenGL- spontaneous reboot, hardware lockup or insufficient virtual memory error from WinXP

Direct 3D - Hardware lockup, BSOD with a message about an infinite loop error with a Nvidia driver

BSOD error message - this varies but refers to a problem with "nv4_disp.dll"

Well your first mistake was buying a Pentium 3 box. Do you know what chipset your motherboard uses? What video drivers are you using? WindowsME I've found is just.. a really bad OS, it has driver problems, weird lockups and slowdowns like you describe. I suggest you try using some different drivers for your video card. Plus, I'm pretty sure VIA makes chipsets for pentium CPUs.. so you might wanna see if you need a 4-in-1 service pack. I suggest you get rid of WinME all together, it's a horrid OS.

WinME is not so bad but its not my choice, i use w2k or xp, for a stable system, but the problem you are having sounds like your system is running out of ram, and is using the hard drive as virtual memmory, this is causing the stutter and slowdown, i recomend you get 1 or 2 256mb sticks of GOOD quality ram, NO cheap stuff. if your on a budget search the web for "cachehman 5" this may help. close down all apps in the background, disable antivirus programs whilst playing games, do all windows updates and get all the latest drivers for all your hardware, the problem you have may not be your gfx card at all, check out some tweak guides for your bios and software and hardware for more comprehensive instructions.

I also am disappointed with my GF3

I have a Leadtek Geforce 3 Original.
I don't think it performs as well as it should. I don't overclock, the only thing I have done is tweak my BIOS to support SBA, FW, and set my CL=2.
I have an Athlon (T-bird) 1.4GHz, A7M266 (AMD760/V686B Combo), 256Mb DDR RAM. I get 6800-6900 3DMarks. Maybe 7000 on a fresh install. I'm currently using the 29.42 drivers.
Reckon I should get some HQ cooling and OC it?
