Pirated Windows and Worms

From:www.dslreports.com

Quote:
An age old catch-22 illuminated once again by the recent Sasser outbreak among members of our Security forum: a large number of PC's run pirated copies of Windows XP, which aren't able to apply security patches because of invalid CD keys. Should these infected PC's be allowed to grab timely critical updates, simply to help lessen the impact of worms web-wide? Many users say pirates who can't find workarounds should "reap what they sow", but their infected pirated Windows boxes impact non-pirates everywhere.

When MS has some way of preventing Pirated corp version of Win XP, someone may find a way to overcome it.

the only way that they've ever tried to stop piracy of the corp version was to blacklist certain keys when SP1 is applied (as Mertsch said).

As long as you have installed a pirated corp version of XP with a key that isn't blacklisted then your fine. And even those people who have a key and can't install Sp1 can use a lovely little tool that's floating around the net that can tell you your current key and swap out the registry values identifiy it and change your key without a reinstall.

I dunno about you guys but this who windowsupdateing a pirated version of windows and MS coming banging on your door has been around since winodows 98 and the introduction of winupdate.

My god you would have thought that 6 years later and no one getting sued by MS would have proved something to all those paranoid peeps out there.
