The following features have been added or changed in V6.5 Build 851:

* Graphical User Interface (GUI) of the Server Edition has been completely renewed
o Integration of the task pane concept, as known from the Professional Edition
o Shortcuts to all frequently used tasks integrated into the task pane
o New Windows 2003 Look-&-Feel

* French language version
* Installation now available as a single executable file

Improvements

The following improvements have been made in V6.5 Build 851:

* Reduced CPU usage during analysis
* Automatically generated description of a job now contains all settings from <Advanced>
* Unmodified jobs are not transmitted again
* Creation of many files during defragmentation does not lead to a loop any more
* Command <Create status report> deactivated, if no connection to the agent exists
* Display "Last stop" of a site job corrected
* Display during boot-time defragmentation (BTD): only files are counted, that are actually considered for defragmentation
* Computation of the fragmentation level has been modified
* Task pane now contains scrollbar, since it can be too large with a screen resolution lower than 1024x768
* Missing size information (Bytes, ...) in computers status reports added
* SPACE method now recognized free space between exclusively locked and fragmented files as free
* Cluster bitmap only updated, if changes have been made during two starts of defragmentation
* O&O DefragWizard does not ask for activation of automatic defragmentation, if it is already activated
* Display of locked fragmented files on spanned volumes corrected
* Analysis of paging file on spanned volumes corrected
* Single change of job setting from "sequential" to "parallel" now possible
* Removal of rarely notification of "Low memory" on spanned volumes, although enough free space available
* Locked fragmented files are now listed as locked and fragmented
* Interpretation of some rare chkdsk messages added
* Exclusion of a complete volume now possible, even if no trailing "\" has been given (e.g. "C:*.*")
* Display of <Number of runs> for permanent jobs corrected
* Entering of only valid IP-addresses in <Add computer> dialog added
* Error message displayed for non-existent/deactivated network connection
* Creation and sending of new jobs in the SiteControl only possible, if computers are available
* Removal of large number of computers from the SiteControl (more than 100) speeded up
* Single-run jobs with activated later start date are now only executed once
* Exclusion of a single file possible (<Apply> activated)
* Active jobs are now saved and displayed correctly
* Time-out for establishing connection changed to 60 seconds
* Display of a start time for automatic jobs removed
* If the letter of a volume is changed, it will be scanned only once
* Microsoft Management Console (MMC) does terminate gracefully after the ComponentInstaller has been used (previously, the MMC stayed in the task list)
* BTD jobs have not been executed correctly under certain circumstances
* SiteControl: No memory leaks any more, if establishing of connections is aborted
* Correction of analysis of position of certain sparse files, which could lead to a loop during defragmentation
* Connection problems with the SiteControl fixed, if too many non-existing computers where listed in the ActiveDirectory
* Online help: name of the command line file corrected ("OODCMD" instead of "OODEFRAG")
* Abortion of the BTD does not remove the paging file, if it had been defragmented before

hmmm hard ... you just try it ...
the most obvious thing is ...
its damn fast
you can select how to defrag ... by space ... by name ... by access or absolutely in the background via stealth
the way O&O arranges files is just way more clever ... if you have a highly fragged drive with lotsa BIG files ... and small ones ... any aplication before O&O 6 (yeah even O&O 4) did not defrag all files ... oh, I mean a full drive ... wheres no space to play around with files ...
but sicne O&O this no more problem ... you say defrag it and its done ...
while some time ago defrag was a job to be done over night ... its now a question of 10 minutes

you just got to try yourselfe ... there are moch more things to love ... at least symantec products are no choice cus of their bloated interface and program structure ... even if it would be a better defragger I would not use it

Can this latest version defrag volumes with a 16k cluster size? Up to now previous versions have only worked on a 4k cluster size.

huh ? never heard about a cluster size limit ... ain't this a filesystem internal thingy ? why should the defrag tool care here ....
OK I never used 16kB clusters but I never had any problem from 0.5 to 4
anyway ... since there is full NTFS support why should 16kB not work ....

Supported File Systems

O&O Defrag supports all file systems from Windows XP/2003, Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4, though certain conditions must be respected to allow O&O to work without any problem. The following paragraphs will tell you more about each of these file systems.

FAT

FAT is the oldest data system, the roots of which go back to MS DOS. It is supported by Windows XP/2003, Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4. O&O Defrag can be used without any problem on FAT drives.

FAT32

FAT32 is the native file system of Windows 95b/98/Me. Compared to the old FAT, it offers certain advantages but is not supported by Windows NT 4. Windows XP/2003 and Windows 2000 offer an integrated support of FAT32, which allows O&O Defrag to function perfectly.

NTFS

The NT File System is the continuation of FAT for Windows XP/2003, Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4. It allows security restrictions for the access of data and offers a higher security regarding file errors and fast access to data.

It is the native file system of both Windows XP/2003, Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4 and therefore allows O&O Defrag to access these drives.

NTFS5

The release of Windows 2000 introduced the new generation of NTFS. This allows an easy access to NTFS5 drives under Windows XP/2003 and Windows 2000.

If however you wish to access an NTFS5 drive under Windows NT 4, you need to install Service Pack 4, which contains drivers for NTFS5. These guarantee compatibility in case of dual installations with Windows XP/2003/2000.

NTFS5 has specific file system properties, some of which already existed on the older NTFS. The following list shows which O&O Defrag properties are supported:

•

Reparse Points

•

Folders can be defragmented online with Windows XP/2003 and Windows 2000

•

Multiple Streams

Volume-, Stripe-, Mirror-Sets and hardware RAID

O&O Defrag entirely supports Volume-, Stripe- and Mirror-Sets. This is also valid for Hardware RAID systems.

EFS (Windows XP/2003 and Windows 2000 only)

A new file system based on NTFS and with a higher data security against unauthorized access was introduced together with Windows 2000. The Encrypted File System (EFS) leaves files unreadable for non authorized users. O&O Defrag supports EFS hard drives and neither changes nor disturbs the integrity and security of files.

ah I found the answere

Quote:
Free space needed for defragmentation

The following limitations are valid for O&O Defrag and are caused by Windows XP/2003, Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4. They cannot be worked around without endangering the integrity of your files.

Size of the allocation units

The size of the allocation units on NTFS drives on Windows NT and Windows 2000 has to be equal to or smaller than 4096 Bytes. Bigger NTFS drives cannot be defragmented. The size of the allocation unit cannot be changed after Windows has been formatted. You will however find third party tools which give you this possibility.

Note: These limitations were removed under Windows XP and Windows 2003 so that all drives, regardless of the size of their allocation unit, can be defragmented.

Size of hard drive

All hard drive sizes supported by Windows XP/2003, Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4 are supported.

The new O&O Defrag Version 6 was developed to be used on servers with a storage capacity of more than 1 terabyte. To learn more about this, please read about our new STEALTH technology..

Folders

Any number of folders can be defragmented. O&O Defrag administrates memory optimally, so as to record all file and folder information. To learn more about this, please read about our new STEALTH technology.

Free hard disk space

Disks without any free space cannot be defragmented. For the best possible results, at least 5% of the whole hard disk capacity should be free. Files with a size larger than the free space available could otherwise not be defragmented.

To speed up the defragmentation process, we recommend you keep about 10 to 15% of free space on your hard drive, though the bigger the hard drive, the smaller this percentage. What really matters is the size of the biggest file that needs to be defragmented or moved around- for this one, you must have enough contiguous free space.

Thanks for the info Mertsch. So it seems I can use O&O with 16k cluster size as I'm running XP.
