Ok guys.. ur turn to help.. £180ish to spend ($290-300)

Ok.. As you can probably see in my Sig I currently have a Albatron GeForce 4200 Ti P Turbo.. An amazing card.. However, with the new DX9 cards available I was looking to upgrade to a hardware supported GFX card... I don't mind whether it is ATI or Nvidia.. as I hav previously had both.. Smile

I would like as many idea's as poss.! However, the card MUST be able to be posted to the UK and link to the web site. (PLEASE!! - Saves sooo much time)

Thanks everyone,

I was thinking of getting a Gainward FX PowerPack! Ultra/760XP 128-MB Golden Sample which IS a 5600 Rev. 2 which clocks t default to 450/900 WAY out performing the normal 5600 and nearly hitting the 9700.

BUT.. where on earth can I get a non-pro Radeon 9800 from for $300!? Cuz if i can... I WILL! Also does anyone have any links to performance comparisions involving the non-PRO 9800 +9700 against the FX's??

EDIT: Newegg.com looks as though they have the right price... but no international shipping.. I NEED a UK retailer! Sad

Here in Russia I can get 9800 non-pro OEM version for $307. I bet it's even cheaper in UK. I don't have any links to 9800 performance comparisons, but I heard that 9800np's performance is about the same as 9700PRO.

Well I can't imagine the 9800 (non pro) actually being CHEAPER than the 9700 (but I admit I honestly don't have any idea).

I'm forgetting about that dopey VAT thing aren't I, because I know here in the US, I got the AIW 9.7kP for ~350, 2 months ago, and figured surely there's a ~300 9700 PRO somewhere, but I forgot that you have to deal with VAT (IIRC)

Honestly, I'm not too sure of any specific stores; I don't suppose Pricewatch lists uk stores, do they?

Yeah, sure enough, there is a pricewatch in the uk (pricewatch.co.uk)

And, sure enough, excluding VAT, there is a 9700 PRO for > £180

What's the deal with VAT anyway? I.E. what is it (I know it stands for value added tax, and it is levied by the EU or something, but why, and to where does it go?)

They do have the 9700 non-pro for your target price though. I suppose the guy who advised the 9800 non pro over the 9700 pro must have meant a 9700 non pro, because the 9800 is indeed much more expensive than the 9700

YOU MY BEST-IST FRIEND.... ARE A GOD AMONG MEN!!! Well done in other words!!!

And VAT is a percentage (17.5% ish) of everything we buy that go's to our government.... However, unlike in the US we do get added benifits... the NHS (National Health Service) which is a free service... schools... police.... firemen... etc... all paid for by the gov.. Also Royal Mail (Our postal service) all employed (or used to be) by the gov.

Well, I'd hardly say the NHS is "free," but our taxes pay for the same things too, sans healthcare. The benefits and disadvantages of state-funded healthcare can be argued, though; as with capitalism in any industry, competition is a good thing (as long as there's regulation, of course). In any event, good luck with your purchase, and I'm glad to help.

I couldn't help but laugh at you calling me a god among men, because after all, Janus is a roman god LOL

I have to say i never knew that...

However... I am STILL confused about which card to buy.. I think im going to wait for a bit and see what comes around.. However, Gainwards 5600 ULTRA FX 760/XP looks very tempting and so does the Saph. Radeon 9600 Pro"firebird" and the Radeon 9700. Which one? Im really not sure...

However, I have heard that the GeForce FX 5700 could be availible as early as early September... and it sounds like a much more promising Mid-range card.... Who knows!?
