Hey guys,

I have already posted back once. I used disk commander which sorted the problem, once I got the correct version that is.

Oh and by the way I KNOW xp is based on NT I've been building and writing software for long enough. but my point is that after check the whole of XP THERE IS NO option like you said only the ability to make files private.

Rubbish as long as the drive is NTFS and you are not showing simple file sharing it WILL BE THERE, trust me.

I have had to sort this problem out loads of time at work for users, taking ownership is how its done when you delete the user or format and loose the users SID.

Why say XP is not based on NT, as a programmer you should know this, if you are that is.

I didn't say that it wasn't based on NT I said it is XP.

XP may well be based on NT but just because the core of it is NT doesn't mean that it is NT.

Oh and sorry I found the option you were talking about right after I wrote the message but windows is acting funny so I'm gonna wipe + reload again.

All my problems seem to stem from NTFS.

Glad you got it sorted 8) , sorry if my previous post was over the top.

The way XP works with all the user, groups, policy's etc is NT, NT is all MS will make their OS's on now.

There we go

a Full Low level format of the HD and windows is working again.

It's not crashing or anything. Perhaps there was something hidden on my drive that was F**k'in it up.

Thanks alot for everyones help it really appreciated. And sorry if I've been a little snappy it's just my PC is my life. The thought of loosing all my apps, documents and shit like that is quite scarey. Especially since I've got a few uni assignments to be handed-in in a few days. lol

Big Grin Thanks again.

humm.. glad all u guys have sorted their theories quickly, before it got ugly. i was almost going to lock this thread .

we all know how we feel when our pc starts going "off the road" , all is well that ends "thread not getting closed" and "IP's and Username not getting banned".

keep posting those problems.

Kyro

So what your user details are the same, the SID (Security Identifier) is different.
These files are linked to a SID that no longer exists you need to take ownership of these files to become yours as currently no user owns them.
right click on the folder, properties, security, advanced, owner, then tick the box to take onwership.

This will fix the problem. In NT/2000/XP when you delete a user it warns you that simply recreating the same username/password will not restore access to files that were previously available to them. Or something to that affect anyway. When you reformated a similar thing happened.

As the Administrator you need to retake ownership of the folder.

Homer you're a god! Halleluja!

I had the same problem once. Being locked out of my own encrypted files after a fresh reinstall. I reformatted my encrypted drive and chose to loose all my files since I wasn't able at the time to recover them (just didn't have the knowhow). It 's more then a year ago and I never used file encryption again. Now thanx to you Homer I can finally use XP to it's full extend again.

Simple Filesharing (Recommended) it says in Folder Options. This really is M$ at its best. Disabling half of the securityfeatures on a Professional OS edition which is built around security. Hehe.

If you look up how to access encrypted files for which no decryption key is present M$ start babbling about Security Certificates and Passworddisks. While it only is a matter of taking ownership like on a Linuxbox.
