No more MS Java VM?!?

Setting up a brand new Dell for a colleague with windows XP and figured I would install Java VM as I normally do. I get prompted, choose to download and get a web page stating "We're sorry. Automatic installation of Microsoft Virtual Machine is no longer provided for Microsoft Windows XP." :x http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/geto...efault.asp Anybody that could provide an alternative to MS or SUN java or at least has another way of downloading VM would be greatly appreciated.

SUN are the original creators of java, and the makers of the most secure version of it. I use it on all my systems. http://java.sun.com has versions for all windows.

I think M$ were made to stop auto installing thier own (which breaks the java standard anyway) due to anti-monopoly action.

MS Java VM

Microsoft has NOT withdrawn its java vm. It has simply stopped automaticly installing it on their os's. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, select Windows update catalog and search for java. You will then be able to download the MS Java VM. If you take a look at the EULA for the package you will see that sun has made microsoft add some new sections to the standard eula.

I agree...

...that you should use Sun's one. The Java 2 1.4 series even integrates quite well with IE, if that is your browser of choice, happily overriding the MSJVM (although you can select either of them as the default after it is installed). It's not only more secure but more compatible too.

You are right, Java 2 v1.4 is better than MS themselves. well, at least we do not have to totally rely on MS for VM. Smile

Re: No more MS Java VM?!?

well guys, this is what i found and it works. firstly, download and install SunJava runtime 2 v1.4 into your PC. then go to windows update in IE. inside the critical updates list, you would find an update mentioning this 'This update resolves the "Java Applet Can Redirect Browser Traffic" security vulnerability in the Microsoft virtual machine (Microsoft VM) on Windows XP and Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), and is discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-013. Download now to prevent a maliciously crafted Java program ("applet") from silently re-routing all browser traffic to the applet’s host without the user’s knowledge'. install this update and reboot PC. you will find that Microsoft VM is installed in your IE. thereafter, you can delete SunJava2 runtime software because you do not require it anymore. hope this would help you guys.

or you can just go to windows update and do that in the first place if you want to use the 5 year old Microsoft version instead of the modern Sun version. Microsoft VM has always been available at windows update, they just are not installing it on demand anymore because of its size. People did not understand why they have to download a 5 meg file to view a page.

Well.....while its true that MS Java Vm hasnt been available for a while via auto-update etc, it appears that they arent even hosting it anymore (even in the catalog!). I heard about this a couple of weeks ago, so i thought id have a look. Sure enough, type "java" or "vm" or whatever into the search within the catalog section, and................MSJavaVM no longer exists!
Another way to find it was to go into the corporate side of things and just get a listing of ALL updates that have ever been available for WinXP. No JavaVM there anymore as well.
Oh, well. Suns is more up to date anyway.
Only prob is a couple of dload sites i frequent require the use of the MS Java VM. If they detect Suns one no applet appears. Talk about crappy programmers...............

Various other sites have reported this problem and have mirrored the Vm if you really do need it. Do a search-o-rama.

okay..straight from the horses mouth itself (ie. M$)

"Practically speaking, for Windows XP users who do not have the Microsoft VM and want a copy, there will be a short period from July 10 to the time Microsoft is able to make it available again during which Windows XP users will be unable to get a virtual machine from Microsoft."

So if you want it.....you cant get it until the SP1 for Xp comes out, as it says here:

"Microsoft will include the Microsoft VM as part of the upcoming Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) CD. The Microsoft VM will not be available from Microsoft with SP1 via Web download - it will only be available in the version of SP1 distributed on CD. "

If you want further evidence....go to the following URL:
