No not necessary. If you think your sound quality is good enough, why upgrade?

I like the expension sound card because it helps to reduce the task for your CPU to process, cause it can perform the task it self, and this will give a bit of performance boost. (May not be noticeable).

Go to http://www.soundblaster.com/products/Aud...tinum_pro/ for more information about Audigy ZS.

the question is just what do you want ?
do you want a OEM system or a high end system ?
for OEM its more then enough since the soundstorm is a really good integrated sound chip
but for a REAL solution a Audigy 2 / A2 ZS is highly recommended - it has the lowest CPU usage outa there and in nearly any category the best sound
just browse the web for reviews (there are many) and you will see that there is a difference .. now you got to chosse ... is it worth the 70€ or not ? - I would/will do it.

It will reduce CPU usage some %5 when you play the big EAX games.

Quality-wise, you won't notice unless you have good speakers.

One question. Has the Audigy 2 ZS full ASIO support?

also check
http://www4.tomshardware.com/video/20021106/index.html

Quote:
ASIO 16/ 48 drivers

Though the Audigy 2 has 24-bit/ 96 kHz compatibility, the ASIO drivers on the CD are ASIO 1.0 and not ASIO 2.0. They are limited to 16 bits/ 48 kHz for recording, so there is no difference with the Audigy 1. And the effects engine is in 48 kHz only. So you can do 24-bit/ 96 kHz recording but not stay in this resolution to apply effects because if you do, the flow will be resampled in 16 bits/ 48 kHz. You can resample it in 24 bits/ 96 kHz later, but you'll have all the quality defects that resampling implies. With regard to latency times, we noticed no special improvement compared to the Audigy 1, which was, in any case, quite up to the mark in this respect. So you can work with latency ranging from 10 to 15 ms on an Athlon XP1800+. We should just add that with ASIO multimedia drivers, you can do 24-bit/ 96 kHz recording, but you will lose the advantage of the very short latency time.

Musicians who would have liked to use the Audigy 2 and ASIO 2.0 drivers will not be completely disappointed, because in early 2003 Creative Labs plans to release an Audigy 2 Platinum eX with a completely redesigned external input/ output rack and a card with 24-bit/ 96 kHz compatibility in all these areas.

btw this is for A2 not for A2 ZS

EAX 4 is not that much difference with 3.0 ... and most games do only support EAX1/2
but 3.0/4.0 is awesome step
I played Call of Duty with EAX3.0 and it rocked ...

hmmm hard to tell the most important changes are there there is a smooth witch between environments .. not like there was e.g. in HL ... hall in this room and just 1 pixel next its plain sound ..
and it just feels .... more "realistic" ... I mean all those bombs and shootings around its just like ur in the middle of the whole action ...

hard to describe .. its just better Wink
just like the SBLive to audigy mod ... there was no change to point at ... it was just better ... it feels just better

I already sold my copy of COD (only wanted to play SP) else I would have made record and compare it outside the game ...
but as you are going to by a Audigy 2 you can test yourselfe and give a report

The coolest difference between 3 and 4 is you can now have multiple environments that effect eachother. So with 4 if you have two rooms made of different materials then bounce sound off of one room back to the other, you can hear the distortions from them both.

Like the above post said, before 4 you would have an instant change in how things sound between environments.

I dunno and "tips"
and any driver/software you can get directly from http://www.soundblaster.com
any beta driver or something like that is anounced on the mainpage for sure
and there is an alternative driver project with totally different apps ... But I really dislike it and with it you can't use all features of the card since there is no support by the selfmade driver ...
i just use the plain original driver nothing modded or tweaked and it just works ...
