need help with internet explorer

last week i installed a new dvd burner.
since then, i cannot open any links in ie.
just goes to a blank page, that is clear. no address in the bar, nothing.
i also found out today, i cannot download anything from microsoft. it opens the dialouge window but never progresses.
i have uninstalled the windvd software, and any registry settings that were there, (i read that on google) also some old creative labs drivers.
i have done everything i can think of and have been told to do.......so before i format and reinstall xp, im asking for some help/ideas.
thanks,
mark

i checked to see what i had running, and i had something called gearsec2, which comes with windvd. i was told to remove it, and it didnt help.

I got this from Microsoft regarding the Update problem:
I understand that Windows Update software is re-offered preventing you from accessing Windows Update site. This might occur if the Windows Update ActiveX controls on your system gets corrupt or not updated. I would suggest you to update your system controls manually from the following URL:

Follow the steps given below to install latest Windows Update ActiveX controls:

1. Download our controls from http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ca.../iuctl.cab
and save them to your desktop.

2. Extract the .cab file following the steps below:
1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.
2. Click "Open".
3. Select all the files listed.
4. Right click on them and click "Extract".
5. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK" .
6. Go to the location you selected and right click the iuctl.inf file.
7. Click "Install".

Restart the computer and disable any anti-virus programs and try the site again.

If the issue still persists, I would suggest you to re-install Internet Explorer as some core components of it could be corrupted. To do this we first need to delete all the previous Internet Explorer installation files so we can be sure to download them all fresh. Those files are in a folder called Windows Update Setup Files. We need to delete this folder or folder, there could be one on both the root of C: and in the folder C:\Windows.

If you need help navigating to those folders here is one way.

1. Double-click the My Computer icon.
2. Double-click the C: drive.
3. Now that you are looking at the folders right on the C: drive see if you have one called "Windows Update Setup Files." If you do then please delete it.
4. After checking the C: drive for the folder then double-click on the "Windows" folder and also look for the folder "Windows Update Setup Files" and delete it.

Once we have the old setup files deleted we just need to go re-download Internet Explorer. You can go to the site below to download this from. It will just reinstall right over the top of your current one. Make sure to disable your antivirus before starting this. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/down...efault.asp
