Need advice on mobo/cpu

I am planning to build a computer very shortly.

I have hesitated due to all the new features that are starting to appear. Things like AGP 8x, DDR400, RDRAM 1060(??), FSB533, Serial ATA, Firewire, USB 2.0, the new PCI specification, etc.
Chipsets from Intel, VIA and SiS. Not to mention new CPUS coming from Intel and AMD.

I am willing to wait awhile in order to get a mobo with these new features.

What I am looking for from you folks are suggestions as to what mobo/chipset/cpu/memory I should get for my new system.

Money is no object (no supercomputers however).

I want my system to be fast and state of the art at least for a little while.

Thanks.

LOL why bother waiting for those features, there not that great, most rdram pc800 can be ran @ 1066 speeds, AGP 8x isn't gonna be anyfaster then 2x in realworld tests, Via will always suck so stayaway from them. USB 2.0 is already old and i highly doubt in the next year or 2 or even 3 PCI is gonna be moing to the 64bit 66mhz slots ya see on server boards, no real need to. IF ya wanna build a fairly cheap comp that is fast and can pretty mutch blow most things away, i'd go with a Asus P4B266 I845d, It has usb2.0 supports 133fsb and greater for the P4, I'd get a P4 1.8a and overclock, i have mine sucessfully running @ 2.57ghz with a pitful 1.575 volts, no danger of killing this chip, a geforce 4 ti 4400 will do, most can easily achieve clockrates higher then the 4600, a SBlive orginal, can be had for 10$ or less and simply rock couple 40gb 7200rpm drives, + a cdrw and a dvd any of your choice, and you have a top class system for about 800$ or less, compared to an OEM like alieanware, they would charge 3000$ for a system of this class, without monitor, add a nice monitor 17 or 19in and its 1000$ of course making sure the mon supports 1600*1200@ atleast 75hz

I agree... if you want THE fastest, go with a P4 solution.
The 2.26B processors are scaling VERY well (hitting 3ghz often)

I have an Abit IT7 mobo (no legacy ports) and it rocks.
RDRAM is the fastest right now... but soon Dual Channel DDR motherboards will be coming out and their bandwith is suppose to be about a GB higher than the PC1066 RDRAM boards.

DDR has already surpassed PC800 (DDR 400 that is) so if you go DDR make sure to get good PC3200 modules (Corsair is the best right now)

And video card... I'd say wait till the 26th, that's when the Radeon9700 is coming out. You want THAT card if you want the best performance to date.

Anything you get will be outdated in a very short space of time, i'd probably just get something cheap and upgrade it often. As with brand new features it's best to wait a while, let them hit the hit the market and become stable first. Often the latest and greatest has bugs and it takes them a litttle while to sort them out.

Just get a CPU around 2ghz
512mb DDR memory (if your hearts set on RDRAM then go for it)
40gb 7200rpm HDD
GF4 DDR 128mb
Have a look around the net at diffrent motherboards, i've had good success with MSI and ASUS, just pick a model and have a look to see if ppl are having issues with it.

If you want a pc for just gaming get this,
amd 2800+ barton and run it at 3000+
asus a7n8x mobo
512mb twinx 3200 corsair ram
With these item's and my 9700non pro i'm getting scores now of 17668 in 3d mark 2001 and 18451 in 3d mark 2000.I previously had a p4 2.4b, 512 ddr333 ram and a epox ep4sda5+ mobo 8x and since i put the new stuff in my scores have jumped by 5000 points easy.

I think things i would never say!!
