MS To Try and Kill Off OpenGL

Do you want MS to have complete control over how gaming API's evolve? Well it looks like you won't have the choice anyway.

Quote:
Microsoft's current plan for OpenGL on Windows Vista is to layer OpenGL over Direct3D in order to use OpenGL with a composited desktop to obtain the Aeroglass experience. If an OpenGL ICD is run - the desktop compositor will switch off - significantly degrading the user experience. In practice this means for OpenGL under Aeroglass:

* OpenGL performance will be significantly reduced - perhaps as much as 50%
* OpenGL on Windows will be fixed at a vanilla version of OpenGL 1.4
* No extensions will be possible to expose future hardware innovations

It would be technically straightforward to provide an OpenGL ICD within the full Aeroglass experience without compromising the stability or the security of the operating system. Layering OpenGL over Direct3D is a policy decision more than a technical decision.

absoluetly no surprise. mS wants developers to use opengl as much less as possible. they almost have bought the whole developer industry for xbox and want to finish off opengl too slowly..

all this does is begs question why support microsoft when it doesnt support choices for customers. :knife:

Then they are going to find more CAD/CAM software moving away to Linux/Solaris. I somehow doubt Autodesk will want to use a gaming API (DX) for CAD.
Goodbye to Windows as platform for Serious design applications.

I don't think MS is stupid enogh to loose potential customers
maybe its completely true and very bad
or someone is just causing some panic ... I would wait and see what time brings
also I see very very few things using OpenGL anyway ... OK i am no CAD user but the only game that is best on OpenGL I know now is HL1
any more ?

All games that utilize id Software's 3D engines use OpenGL. To name some: Q1, Q2, Q3, Doom 3, RtCW, MoHAA and of course Quake 4. Unreal was formerly an OpenGL based game which migrated to Direct3D over time. World of Warcraft has an option to be run in OpenGL (I used it to circumvent crashes I had while using D3D).

OK ... I almost forgot ID ...
but nobody can ignore that openGL is essential in very few things
its always bad to loose a choice ... but there is always another side ...
and who can now say that the wrapper is that bad and things like that ...

I personally see no serious reason why I should not support the choice of limiting OpenGL support or even dropping support

we wil see whats coming

Another thing is portability. I don't think Mac OS and Linux have native Direct3D support. So porting pure Direct3D games to that platforms would be much more difficult than to port OpenGL based games. In times where Linux is on the rise and Apple could get more marketshare due to their move to Intel's technology it gets more and more important for game developers to make their products cross platform. But maybe it's exactly that what MS wants to prevent? For me it's just another try to bind people to their proprietary technology to strengthen their monopoly. Let's put it that simple: Alternatives and choices are never bad because they guarantee improvements and innovations.
