Halo Demo Doesn't Start

My system specs are in my sig, obviously it's enough to run this game, but when I try to run the demo it says "an error has occured [sic]: could not initialize direct3d"

No, I haven't changed any settings (I can't, because it doesn't start)

WTF?!

I also have a similar problem with the BF1942 Demo, I try to start it, windows makes the "ding" error sound, and it goes back to the desktop.

nearly right ...
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo\halo.exe" -vidmode 1024,768,102

thats the trick ..... same with MoHAA .... just patch 1.1+ and now there is one file .... dunno which but one and there must be one option activated to use 61+ Hz ... search net for this

It's all in the game readme, there is also an 'Tips & Tweaks FAQ' that was released somewhere on the Halo website. It shows you how you can tweak the game to your liking via the menus and the shortcut switches.

I don't remember seeing "game doesn't start because we stupidly lock the refresh rate" in the readme. Yes, the videomode thing is there, but how the hell would I know to use it when the damn game wouldn't start.

Oh, it gets better. The stupid POS f*cked up my sound, so now I have to reinstall my soundcard. After I installed it, I no longer get sound in windows. Thanks Halo!

I can't understand that too ..... nearly any game works with non 60Hz even the cheapest 0,50€ games .... but such things like MoHAA or HALO have that bugs .... don't they test their games or what ??? the only thing more stupid is a non-working setup
