Just a small query: I've got drives from A: to G: on my comp and I'd like to adjust which drive gets assigned which letter (eg. my 2nd HDD is E: at the mo, but I would like it to be D: ). Does anyone have any advice on how to change the drive letters? I'm running XP Pro...

Drive letter assignment can easily be changed using the Disk Management plugin in MMC. Right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage". Highlight the Disk Management plugin in the left pane and off you go. Be warned that certain volumes cannot be changed and by altering the drive letter you may interfer with functioning of programs (ie, if you installed from CD-ROM D: and then change this path to G: your program will still expect the CD-ROM in D: if that is the case).

Drive letters should be changed right after installation if at all. Going through the registry and INI files to alter drive paths is a pain. Changing drive letters won't cripple your system (it won't let you), but it can render software 'broken'. Best practice is to set this up after a clean installation with consideration for future upgrades.

That said, drive paths should not matter all that much. Perhaps you are a 'perfectionist', but keep in mind that this is just a symbol and that there is no real reason to have a 'logical' sequence. Drives can be grouped by type in the explorer anyways. You do not need to have them ordered/grouped by drive letter as in older versions of Windows.

Control panel --> Administrative tools --> Storage --> Disk management

Rightclick on the drives and choose "change drive letter and paths"

right click on "my computer"....goto "manage"......then "disk management"
