Deleting Windows Messenger

I'm pretty sure I heard that you can remove Windows Messenger from Windows XP somehow, but I can't remember where that was...

I'd love to rid my OS of that annoying messager...

just rename the directory c:\program files\messenger

rename it whatever you like, also be sure to turn off all the auto load and run in background options in messenger

yes it's possible

in your windows\inf folder (who's hidden), there's a textfile named 'sysoc.inf', edit it with notepad and find the line beginning with 'msmsgs'. then remove the 'hide' option ( ,hide,7 -> ,,7 )
save and quit notepad, go to add/remove programs in your control panel and logically, you can now uninstall messenger.

Just like Major Slaughter wrote. I didn't rename the folder though, just the executable (msmsg). All I did was highlight this file, click "rename" and add a "1" to the end of the name, ending up with "msmsg1". Now Outlook express loads very quickly adn there appear to be no side effects at all.

This way seems a lot easier than trying to edit things or actually uninstall them (unless you really like to do that sort of thing  ) amd also means that if for some reason LOL LOL you want to start to use messenger again then you only need to rename the file with its' original name.

It can be deleted, just click "Start", click "Run", and type:-
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Click "OK", and reboot and thats the end of it.

even if you delete/rename msmsgs.exe the file msgsc.dll still gets loaded when ever you go to those pages, so its really best to del/rename the whole folder, and check back once and a while, since windowsxp has a funny way of reinstalling messenger...guess it cant take a hint

start>run>gpedit.msc
hit enter
go to user configuration>windows components>windows messenger

you now have 2 options:
Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run
Do not automatically start Windows Messenger initially

enable the 1st one and youll never ever have a problem even if it is still on the system Smile
enable the second one and it just wont autostart Smile
