i got a question

i use a XP2600+ (166mhz) and i thought, it's time to upgrade to a xp3200+ (no 64)

do u think, i can do it an get an extra perfomance boost, or is the "power" nearly the same?

get a XP2600-M from newegg, they overclock great! have a 3200 that max's out at 2.5 ghz, have hit 2.8 with the 2500 and 2600 Mobile chips with air-cooling. Am not pimping their products but can't find the Mobile proc's anywhere else:

I see that they have a XP3000-M on there now too but haven't tried one yet...

the athlon 64 is OK ... even tho the 64bit are useless at that time
wait for sockel 939 ... its much better and does have a future
maybe its even dualcore compatible ... which will make it worth

Actually I was going to buy a whole new pc and get the 3000+ but a friend of mine (who knows alot about PC's) said wait for the socket 939 so yep. I hope the prices come down quick for the socket 939's because they cost wayyyy toooo much right now :knife:

one of the biggest adv. are DUAL channel interface and other stuff
and as said ... the 754 is already dead there will be one or two more CPUs and then its dead
sure the 939 is expensive ... it was just released and motherboards need to be develloped

How long do you estimate will it take for the 939's to drop in price?

Sure, you can keep upgrading over such little changes if you have the cash.

I for me use larger timespans to upgrade as my bank account does'nt reach that high in the plus.

Besides, it's holiday time, so no money for the Computer Bizz.

since you're not into overclocking wait until the 939 platform becomes the new standard (socket A is staying for a while too, new CPU's from AMD soon). The clock speed difference from the 2600 to the 3200 won't be very noticeable, at least not as much as having twice the L2 cache with the 3200. Since you have memory that'll run faster why not try a slight FSB kick? You can always turn it back if there's problems. As you may know CPU's are not manufactured by speed but are labeled by the speed that they run stable at. I mentioned the Mobile socket A Barton's because they have a 1.45 volt core voltage and offer the best bang for the buck by far. You WILL get a noticeable difference from the 2600 for less than $90.00 US and it will run cooler as well.
939 not only gives dual channel but unregistered and faster, cheaper memory support as well as quicker hypertransport bus speed. I'm waiting for the prices to drop before upgrading the box I'm on at the moment (two-yr old Gigabyte GA7VRXP 2.0 w/XP2200+, a "test mule"). Too bad a bunch of us here couldn't eventually get it together to buy a batch of FX's in bulk at one time to save money...

well im a gamer on a small budget so i always think that getting yesteryears performance parts are the best as the new generation products may give u future upgrade potential but are far more expensive

i deliberatly got a socket 754 athlon 64 as the price has dropped by £100 in 2 months and it was affordable

also i brought the radeon 9800pro. admittedly the new x800s are far better but realistcly none of 2days cpus will drive them to their real limits. also the performance part of an outdated gpu will give high detail on almost all games (my friends ti 4600 now almost 3 yrs old looks just as good as mine and he has 2x AA enabled)

the reason this is is because the GPU manufacterers new mid range tend to be slower than the previous high end (look at 5600 vs ti 4200!!)
