I would...

I'll go across the grain - because I just upgraded from a 2700+ to a 3200+

One of course is NOT BARTON and the other is - so what I've done is taken the 2700+ from this system and placed it on a A7N8X Deluxe v1.0 board because that is close to the highest it can use and placed the 3200+ on this system which is a A7N8X Deluxe v2.0 board which the 3200+ is the highest it can go...

Bottom line is now I have two PC's just because I slapped down 170 for the 3200+...

Both systems rock and you can't really tell a difference between the two in speeds - NOT BY THE EYE that is - games run smoother and applications etc. and the benches show the increase but it's truly hard to tell how much of a difference it was between the two...

Antec 600Plus Mini-Tower (600W)
AMD Athlon XP 3200+
WIN XP SP2
Asus A7N8X Deluxe v2.0
PNY Geforce 6800 Ultra
3 Gig Corsair XMS 3200 DDR (400MHZ)
(2) 80 Gig Seagate Serial ATA Barracuda V

newer doesnt always mean better

the new prescotts have shown no notable performance increase over the northwoods

also the 9600/9500 and geforce fx5600/ti 4200 Smile

but if he doesnt have enough money theren hes better off geting the old performance parts rather than the slowest of the newest type as chances are that the older one will b faster (maybe also more stable)

athlon 64 3200+
msi k8t neo
512 ddr400 RAM
80+120gb HDD
msi 9800pro

actually you can buy 3 types
the core is "newcastle"
the 3500+
which is 2200 MHz 512kB L2
3700+ @ 2400 512
or you go for the absolute high end
FX-53 3800+ 2400 1024kB

later the FX-55 will come
actually its not really a question of the speed ... more it is a question of money ... since you pay 3500 to 3800 nearly double the price
so I would go for 3500 and try to overclock it
since the CPU is very fast "itself" the clock does not matter that much ...
just like DDR and SD ... when you got DDR ir does not reall matter if ya got 333 or 400 or even dual channel ... you got DDR not SD is what matters ... same here

ur gna have 2 wait bout 12 months 2 get a whole computer at £450

i built my current system using 'old' components and the total was £680 (all the components were released over a yr ago!). this was with extensive price researching!

ive noticed that the prices go down to a point then stagnate. i had this when choosing my last gfx card as i wanted the ti4800 but couldnt get 1 for less than £115 before they all went

also now the 9800pro levels are dwindling but they still sell for £150+ even tho the x800pro is out

people buy them as they dont know bout the new technology or they know thats the best deal

can i ask y u want socket 939 as u can get 754 for so much less (and with current mobo prices u can upgrade the cpu and mobo later for not that much)?

the newer the better doesn't apply to: vintage audio equipment, musical instruments, most alcoholic beverages, cheese, vintage automobiles, and a lot of other things my failing memory can't recall at my advanced age. Ya gotta have a good laugh every now and then, thanks for reminding me to. Hope a few others got one too, best wishes for a good healthy laugh to all...*S*

(I forgot to add recently "old' computer equipment as well, nothing like having stuff laying around to build test "mules" with to try beta software, reg hacks, software and other mods on so you don't end up hosing your main box)

If you get 3800, don't. For only a small bit more, you can get the S939 FX53 Tongue
