CPU Cooling?

Recently, my fan has been making the most god-awful noise.

So, I ordered a new fan (Socket 7 370 pin)....

The problem is this, the processor is stuck to the fan!
I can get the fan and processor out, but they come out together and don't come apart....What needs to be done?
It is the family's system, so I don't know much about it. How do you seperate them?

It an OEM system? sounds like either the material they used has gone solid, or they used epoxy like compaq ect. tend to do.

Have you tried doing it after the system has been running a while and the heatsink is still warm?

I know some people wrap thier video cards in plastic (the static free bags not normal ones Tongue ) and freeze it for a few minutes to weaken the epoxy, but I don't know if I'd recommend that.

The best way to get them apart is? stick them in the frezzer for least an hour or two then it should be ok to pull it off. that's how i usally take my blue orb off the GPU.

The best way to do this is to put a small bag of desiccant such as silica gel into a Zip-Lock™ bag with the video card. The desiccant will absorb the moisture and prevent damage to the card.

Lots of electronics come with small silica gel bag to protect the product before it gets to the consumer, but the effectiveness of the silica gel dimishes over time as it absorbs moisture. But the silica gel can be re-activated by dying it out -- just place it in an oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours.
