An issue with IE, maybe?

Hi, I seem to be having a problem with Internet Explorer recently, and was wondering if the good tech folks here might be able to help me sort it out. I'm running WindowsXP Pro, with SP1 btw...

It seems that when I'm in IExplorer, sometimes clicking on certain links doesn't work. I click on a link, and where it should normally launch the link, it just sits there. If I copy the address the link points to and paste it in the address bar, the page opens normally. Another example I found last night was when I went to the MS update site; I get to the spot where I've got my selected updates chosen but when I click on the 'Install' button, it just sits there and doesn't begin the download of the updates. This was working just a few days ago however. The only new software that I can recall installing since then is the 5.3.2.254 update for Easy CD Creator.

This happened to me once before, and I don't remember what I did to fix it. Actually, if I recall correctly, I think after a couple of days it just started working right again. Any ideas where to begin looking folks? Thanks!

T.

I have the same problem. As a workaround, try right clicking, and select "open in new window". This usually works for me.

Good Luck!

Tried that too, doesn't work. As I say, it's a weird one and I'm not sure where to begin to look.

trub shootin

When was the last time you ran a virus scan? Try that first. (I see more viruses in a week then most people do in a lifetime)

Next you might want to try a repair in Windows. Boot off your WinXP Pro CD, at the first point it asks for input hit "R" for repair. This will take you to a command prompt. type in "chkdsk /r" without the "" then enter. It'll take about 40min but it'll go though all the system files, check and repair them if they are damaged in anyway.

good luck

I think I have it narrowed down, but am not sure now how to proceed. It looks like IE isn't running java stuff. Was on a page earlier and tried clicking on a link which was supposed to open a window with a graphic in it. It didn't, of course, but I noticed the link was this :

jpopwindow("http://www.deerfield.com/products/wingate_vpn/images/screen_encryption.gif","encryptionprops",500,410)

I have looked through the security setting in IE with regards to java, but everything looks okay to me, as far as I can tell. Is there a site at MS to download java updates?

Well I seem to have fixed the problem. I did a :

sfc /scannow

and it went through and checked all the protected system files. I guess I had corrupted a file somehow and doing that above command fixed the issue. Thanks to all who tried to help me out!
