XboxMediaCenter (XBMC) is a new free open source (GPL) multimedia player for Microsoft's Xbox. XboxMediaCenter is still in beta stage but can currently be used to play and view most video/audio/picture formats such as MPEG/MPG, VOB, AVI, OGM, DivX, XVID, MP3, OGG, JPG, GIF and many more direct from a CD/DVD in the DVD-ROM or of the Xbox build-in hard disk drive, it can also play files over a network (LAN) from a PC via an "XStream Server" application or from a Windows (SMB) share.

It has playlist + slideshow functions as well as the ability to function as a full replacement Xbox dashboard. These and more features enables the Xbox running XboxMediaCenter to fully function as a multi-media jukebox. XboxMediaCenter also known as "Xbox Media Center" or simply "XBMC".

I wonder why they went and did this. They should've simply did an XBMP3.0 release. Hopefully they won't pull this stunt again and stop working on xbmc like they did with xbmp.

well now that I've spoken with the developers, they said XBMP was nothing but a huge bloat of code (this is what happens with OpenSource, hehe).

Anyways, they're clearing it out and 'starting over' from scratch, and that's what XBMC is for. Hopefully it'll run a lot better than XBMP.

XBMP runns pretty good, (it does have a few problems and lacks stuff but) they have said they will still do some small updates to it also so... As for XBMC I gave it a try earlyer today it's pretty neat and the goals seem way nice but its super buggy right now. so I shall be useing my gold old xbmp
