This actually is a good thing. Gamepads on the PC suck in general. Nobody makes a dual-analog stick pad that still has a digital pad. They always make that damned thing a flight hat...AKA useless for 99.9999% of us.
Right now the best PC pad is a tweaked XBox pad or an adapter that lets you use a console pad.

Up to this point the current Logitech controllers for the PC have been pretty good.

...and for the record this isn't exactly 100% brand new news either b/c MS hinted to this a while ago.

UPDATE: I didn't click the link before but WHY is the controller $45? $45?!?!?!? That is more then what Logitech charges for their corded PC controllers.

Freakin MS...greedy bastards.

I've used their gamepads and they pull the same crap that everyone else does. 2 analog pads...and a useless POV hat instead of a digital pad. Playing anything that needs precise inputs like a fighting game is simply unplayable with a POV hat. It's the one area of control that the consoles rule - gamepads. Logitech pads and a few others are okay, but nobody makes digital pads that work with analog sticks.

The controllers cost $45 because MS has lost BILLIONS so far on their xbox experiment. They're a publically traded company, which means they're required to make profits or they could be liable for lawsuits.

Yup. To top it off, I'm sure digital pads likely cost more, too. Remember back when Sidewinder controllers were $30-$35 each? It's because they were digital. Before analog was considered to be a good thing, most pads cost that much.
I'd assume that with 2 analog sticks, a digital pad, and the ability to work with both the XBox and natively via USB...it's not cheap.
It's still overpriced, but it makes some degree of sense.
My new plan is to get an extra WIRED controller with the XBox so I can use it with my PC, too. That is unless they have some sort of wireless USB access point for the wireless one's too...

I agree with above. And for 45 bucks they can go and sodomize themselves. Ps2 pad+adapter for the win! (works in linux too)
