XBox 360 Games Scratched?

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 12/05/2005 12:12 AM [ Print | 12 comment(s) ] · 3251 views

A growing number of Xbox 360 customers are reporting having problems with their disc's getting scratched by the DVD drive when switching the unit's position from vertical to horizontal and vise versa.. Initially we thought this was the usual fanboy vs. hater propaganda that swirls around the launch of any new console like this.

It didn't take long until the seriousness of the situation reared it ugly head right here in the Llamma's shop. I personally have experienced this issue not once but twice already. Here I was at a friends house helping him get this 360 all setup and networked for Live. In the process we decided to lay the Xbox on it side instead of the upright position.. I thought nothing of doing this while the unit was powered up and in the middle of a game. Big Mistake! I felt and heard the scratch happen and immediately thought; uh oh.. I think I just ruined your Call of Duty 2 buddy... sorry!

Who would start moving around any type of powered up unit?!?!?!

Just because the unit can play disks horizontal, or vertical doesn't indicate you should tilt them while their running.. LOL

What morons!! You cant move do that with computer DVD-Rom drives nor can you do that with hard drives while their on. Only car CD players and walkmans can you move or drop them and they wont scratch. HAHA, have them tilt their home PC Computer from horizontal to vertical a few times while their DVD-ROMRW drive is readingurning and have them tell you the results. Also have them do that to their HDD's also and ask them if they hear a high RPM scratching noise. Tell them to read the instructions first before blaming the hardware. LoL..

Does that mean I wont be able to install one in my car?
It worked well with the Xbox and the PS2 and they didnt scratch CDs even on serious road bumps and with a pretty hard suspension.

Yeah well, read/write errors would be the case if you move your pc to much but scratching the CD??? Come on... Maybe if you shake it like mad, but they only switched positions, and he wrote he did it very carefully the second time too.

Remember this is a game console so lots of children will own one in their room and everytime they touch the console accidently (or not) it destroys a CD???

To be honest I was about to buy one in spring to build it into my car for my niece and nephew, but if this is indeed common I will rather wait for the PS3, even if it wont be as good as the 360 and I dont like Sony.

Btw he also updated the article and said it looks like it can also happen when the console is not moved.

Someone also wrote this: "You guys seem to forget that when you have surround sound there are vibrations occuring."
Indeed. Get a nice 5.1 system hooked up and turn it loud and it can happen too.

I am in the US army and during the assault on bagdad we had an xbox installed in our tank.

So now im wandering if it would still be possible with the new xbox. Iran has some rough terain.

RTFM - it clearly states that if you want to switch positions of console you must remove dvd first. Lack of keyboard and mouse support in fps games hurts a lot :/

Agreed about k+m combo. Playing fps with pad is like playing Dance Dance Revolution without dance mat.

I indeed does. But what if the manual of a car reads to turn the car off before you take a bump on the road? Will you also tell the people who didnt do it "RTFM"? Lemming.....

I hope you know what I mean with it.

Its ***** common sense to make a childrens product at least a little reliable.

You want to tell me your remote control never slipped off your hand and fell down? Did it still work after that? Of course it did unless you smacked it down with a passion or like to sit at the open window while watching TV..................

Looks more like you have an Xbox360 in your brain scratching it all over every second...

Um, if you guys had time to play xbox games during the assault of baghdad, no wonder the situation is so fucked up in iraq right now! ;)
