Just saw this bit of news at Amdzone.com:
We have learned today from AMD and confirmed with Valve here at E3 that there will be a x86-64 port of the Half Life 2 client. This is in addition to the x86-64 port of the Counterstrike server that will be available soon. We saw the Half Life 2 demonstration and it looked amazing. Doom III and Half Life 2 will sell some video cards.

Hot Damn!! It'll be interesting to see if there is any performance increase from this. The server for Counter Strike has already been converted. UT2003 has already been converted as well. One of these got a 30% boost in performance while I think the other got a 15%, not sure which got what as my memory is a bit hazy. However, even the lower score (15%) isn't anything to scoff at. These increases appear to be due in part to the extra general purpose registers available in 64-bit mode If Half-Life 2 seems similar improvements, the 64-Bit AMD systems could be THE gaming systems to have, assuming more games are converted of course. Two games and a server port are a great start, but we need more. Anyone hearing any performance numbers associated with the HL2 port? |
