Phemo at Overclockers UK was the one who first figured it out and shared it with everyone:
I know the first thing you'll ask is how I did it. Well, I got a very sharp knife and scraped off my previous conductive paintwork, then I used the knife to scrape away at the two points - we are using the right points after all. I scraped them away until there was some bare copper exposed, bright copper instead of the usual dull, then re-did the paint job, booted Windows up and ran ATITool, she now apparently has 16 pipes
There's a picture of the contacts you need to connect over at the Overclockers UK link above, or I got it hosted over at Elite Bastards too.

Didn't ATI state a month ago that this MOD was impossible! I guess, they just have been lying again to their customers. Time to get used to it. |

'I guess, they just have been lying again to their customers. Time to get used to it.' Says the NVIDIA employee or naive customer... |

There is one guy that confirms he can't do it on his card, even citing that he's redone the points. Either of the following is true: A) The 3 confirmations are all the same person OR are ATI employees filling the forums with crap that isn't true, and eventually going to say "Well it was only on a certain batch!" B) The guy attempting it isn't doing the right points. Don't get me wrong, user error can be a big issue. However, this looks like a relatively easy mod so I can't see how this guy could go wrong. We will see. |

A nice theory The mod is easy, but it's just getting the guts to scrape away at those points relatively tough without wanting to trash an expensive card. It took me 2 attempts before it got working. Hopefully we'll have more reports later |

Do you have any idea how much trouble I'm gonna get in with me wife for going out and buying an X800 pro behind her back?!?!? ;) Thank you and all the gang over at OCers UK, that was a most impressive thread last night where you all figured it out. |

...there's been a few ATi employees who were teasing me about it and they've been telling me for months that it's probably possibly but they tried to make it harder this time. I still don't think this is that bad a thing for ATi, how many average users would even dream of attempting this? For geeks like me and thee it's a no-brainer, but most people I know break into a cold sweat when I start talking about changing drivers....a hardware mod on a $400 bit-o-kit I'm pretty sure would be the height of insanity. |

Yayzers! The formatting was worth it! Thanks for deleting me "extended text"...I almost thought you'd leave it in as a bit-o-a-spanking. Keekles & roofles, I'm giddy about this mod being discovered! |
