Windows Update V6 Gone Public?

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 04/05/2005 07:31 PM [ Print | 14 comment(s) ] · 3022 views

When I pointed my browser to Windows Update I expected to see trusty ol' V5 (Windows Update Version 5) but was presented with V6 instead. It's important to note that I haven't done anything fancy with my computer and I confirmed this with another Neowin reporter before writing this, and the same happened to him. He got V6.

1. If you read the article, it means that if you own a pirated copy of Windows XP you will not be able to receive updates.

2. V6 has not been released to public yet.

This will be the end of Windows users database. Most people that build their computers are of the 'elite' standard anyways. Now, what happens when you stop letting pirated users update WinXP? They goto other OS's like linux

Now, you have a ton of people switching to linux. What happens next? They stop buying Windows software, Windows hardware, Windows devices in order to use linux flavored programs.

This in tern causes programmers to stop selling as much software, or programming as much software in windows OS and working on other versions like Linux and MacOS, takeing a chunk out of microsofts licensing fee's to work with windows.

Great going Microsoft, you just shot yourself in the foot.

You know how you fix this? YOU MAKE YOUR OS AFFORDABLE. I have -YET- to see Windows XP approach a decent price range for a OS here verses other flavors of software.

At Futureshop I can get Linux RedHat, newest version for $40. Windows XP HOME Edition comes in at a whopping $300, $350 for the Pro version.

Can you see the problem here?

Oh, and microsoft said they would lower the cost of WinXP 3 years ago, so far the prices have only gone UP from WinME to WinXP. WinME is STILL $140 here.

Microsoft needs to get a kick in the tucus and start marketing their software properly, cause they are going to loose out on a -TON- of licensing revenue's if they start blocking pirated versions.

Now that you've said what you'd like to happen, let me say what will happen: Nothing. The warez community will come up with a patch like it always has, and life will go on.

The patch (or rather a new keygen) is already out for almost 8-10 months. With this keygen you can make yourself a genuine copy of WinXP SP2 which will identified as that through M$'s online validation process...

Just to note that certain area's of windows updates are now in effect and in use. You are unable to download Direct X 9.0c from Microsoft anymore with a invalid Windows XP install

I have never used wxp untill I bought it last week. It has sp2 intergrated.
My first log into windows update gave me version 6 and has ever since. looks diferent and works just as badly. I also found that if i disable auto windows updates on my system I am not able to do a manuel update check on the website, if I enable it again, windows update website works again, what a stupid move MS. Binlarden should of landed on their head office.
