Windows Authentication

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 02/02/2005 06:50 PM [ Print | 21 comment(s) ] · 2288 views

Microsoft recently announced its latest ploy to extort more money from the public and further strengthen their software monopoly: they want to make you pay for a legal copy of Windows before you get any OS add-on features or updates. To make matters worse, they are even extending this restriction to security updates, potentially placing millions of software pirates and their families at risk. At least that's the way that some people see it.

muahahahaha if they are smart enough and think they can't get away with freeloading.. who cares if their computer is at risk ??
Here I side with MS, why in hell should they care at all for ilegal software users ?? Why ????
Let their computer burn with trojans, viruses and spam untill the cows come home I say!!!!!

The problem is that most trojans and viruses don't just harm the person that gets infected with them, but uses their computers and internet connections to spread and attack other users. In turn, this creates a lot of unnecessary traffic online and lowers the overall performance of the internet in general.

However, I do side with Microsoft with wanting to protect the integrity of their products--but nonetheless, such moves are slowly going to push people to the alternative products--not to legitimate purchases of Windows XP. Not everyone is aware of the various methods of obtaining discounted Windows products, and not everyone can take advantage of such offers. The problem of piracy isn't so much the average Joe as it is the person slightly more knowledgeable about computers (or so they'd like to think). The people who say "Windows XP Home Edition isn't enough for me, I have to have "Professional" Edition" when there really isn't much of a difference unless you're running a business environment.

Nonetheless, people are going to start to move to alternatives to Microsoft products. All the license verification in the world isn't going to stop people from using alternatives and not pirated versions of Microsoft products.

"ploy to extort more money" - who are they kidding? I say good for MS. All of those pansies without legit copies should get a job and those who don't like to call up MS for authentication should get over their social anxiety disorder.

i agree against piracy, i am not saying i havent donwloaded or installed illegal software/music also, but i am saying that software should be 100% risk free and they shouldnt be relying on selling more from security updates, maybe special features but not security,.... i dont agree with that, programs should be secured from the start, thats why they are purchased....

What normal minded person has a problem with Microsoft *not* making Windows updates available to those who never bought it in the first place? If someone shoplifted a BMW dhould they be suprised were BMW not to honor the warranty on it?

No you know what? I am FED UP with microsoft OVERCHARGING for their OS's

I paid $400 for Win 98, $120 for the upgrade CD, then I paid $295 for Windows ME which was a bug filled deathbomb of disaster, and now I have to pay them $350 for a stable OS again?! I don't think so!

I can buy PC's for $399 that come with WinXP Pro on it, and I am getting 80 gig HD's, Tower, Processor, Ram etc (looking at flyer) so chargeing $350 for a OS is total balony.

Microsofts price range for upgradeing OS's is completely up in the air and out of most peoples reach, its just not feasable. I work with linux redhat at work which we bought SEVEN YEARS AGO and we can STILL upgrade that at no cost, yet any version of windows (Come on, WinXP isn't new its 7 year old server software) I have to pay out the nose for? NO WAY.

The XBOX uses WINXP OS base to run, I don't see the sticker price on a XBOX costing $700 now do I? NO! Its because its just copied and given a serial number.

If microsoft wanted to make any SERIOUS money they would go back to the table and rethink how they price things out. If only 1 out of 5000 people buy your OS for $350, versus 1 out of every 100 for $50, your going to make a fortune.

$350 here will get me a Geforce 6800GT, I'm not going to blow $350 on 7 year old software after giving them close to a grand on software BEFORE that diden't even work properly (Really, Win95 was a mess, Win95 RC2 was semi-stable, Win98 was unstable, Win98 SE was unstable, WinME I coulden't run for more then 4 hours without the kernal self destructing on me requireing a reboot).

If you were going to spend $350 on a videocard or a OS, which one would you choose?

Furthermore, for all the time, work and money I lost to their older OS's crashing, why can't I sue their ass's for all my wasted effort? Oh yeah I forgot, the software comes "AS IS" and "We can't be held responsible for it if it dosen't work"

For something that is sold "As is" and "We can't be responsible for it if it dosen't work", you sure put a pretty damn high price tag on it!

And nobody kicks up a fuss! Could you imagine the outcry if Counter-Strike source refused to run on any Athalon XP computers, and valve just said "Sorry! Sold as is! You can still play Half Life 2 so don't complain" people would throw a freaking shitstorm about it.

Updateing software is part of the business of software, if you can't support it, don't sell it

So don't buy it then. Overcharging is hardly a reasonable defence for stealing. But yeah, you do of course have a point, if Microsoft did l;ower the price then more people would buy it of course. Then again, how much would they have to lower it to make it worthwhile for the people who pirate it to buy it instead? Would $50 change peoples minds? Doubt it.
Lets face it, the people who pirate windows aren't going to change their minds unless there is a drastic reduction in price. The people who buy Windows are probably going to buy it regardless of cost, e.g. businesses.

>>Updateing software is part of the business of software, if you can't support it, don't sell itdon't buy it then why should you be able to update it?

All MS are saying is that people who legitimately own their software have full and complete access to updates. Those who have stolen it will have less so (but still limited update ability).

Really, where's the problem with that? Or did you not actually read the article?

The problem with it is I have paid for 3 NON WORKING os's from them, I use the 4th for free (Because at the time WinXP was $599) and I will continue to use for free untill microsoft works out a reasonable price bracket for their product.

Why should home users get bilked over and all the corporations like Dell or Compaq get to buy the OS for $10 a pc?

Please research before you post. I work in the industry, Windows costs us about $80 to put on customers machines.

Newegg sells OEM Windows XP for about $90, we sell it for about $100.

Clearly you don't know where, and how, to shop. Which I find strange, because you seem to have the ability to discover how to get hold of illicit versions of software.
