After the apparently bugged 4.50 release, VIA just posted this bugfix release.

We properbly wont see anything new in the driver besides the bugfix. no changelog included.

From INQ:

After detailed investigation of the issues that have been reported, we have found that they only occur with systems configured with 1GB or more of memory and an ATI graphics card where the AGP aperture has been set above 32MB.

We are currently working on a new revision of the driver that changes the default size of the AGP aperture to 32MB.

So that means they aren't really going to fix the bug, only do a work-around? And if you happen to accidnetally tweak your AGP aprerture size above 32MB.. bye bye to your files again?"

I don't think I wanna try it just yet. I'll wait & see if there is any fallout this time.

What is the advantage using these drivers than the default with windows XP?

So who's going to be brave (daft) enough to try these drivers first??? Especially since VIA don't seem to realise that the problem with the 4.50 drivers DOES screw up machinse with < 1Gb of RAM (mine has 512Mb).

To support AGP 3.0 e.g. AGP 8x, and newer chipsets as well as performance and stability enhancements/fixes. But nobody is forcing anyone to install them so stay with the default ones if you're happy.

Anyone try these? I'm at work and haven't gotten a chance.
I uninstalled my old 4-in-1's and tried reinstalling several older versions on top of them, but it never worked and the newest Hyperions always coming back.
As for VIA's claim...I've only got 512MB of RAM (along with an ATI Radeon 9800 and KT400) and I got the delayed read/write errors galore. Granted I don't think I lost any data in the process...but my PC was all but unusable until I started trying every trick in the book. I've got my desktop functional, but I have essentially disabled 3D of all sorts.

I seriously doubt you are going to get 100% functionality back with any 4in1 drivers untill you reformat. I think every1 can get to the decktop after a delayed write error, but your Os is pretty much hosed till you reformat.

This messed up my system real good also. I have an 8500DV and 1GB of DDR, and it just completly crapped out on me. It would jump right into windows scan disk before windows loaded, checking for errors/corrupted files, and it did the first time (obviously after the craziness that went down). After each scan the computer would just restart, endlessly. The only way I got it to work at all it by hitting F8, going to startup menu, booting into safemode (which took minutes to load rather than seconds), then doing a system restore to the day before. This mostly works, but windows still tries to do a scan every time I boot, but at least I did not lose any data (although, the restore points I made before I installed the drivers that day were gone). I am really pissed at VIA for this mess.

I will not even consider upgrading from 4.49 until they actually fix the problem, not make a workaround; and until I hear it works for everyone.

I also have 512 MB of RAM and a Radeon 9800 (but an Abit KR7-A mobo) and I had the same problem. Apparently VIA doesn't even know what's going on.

Like I suspected, my files weren't really hosed, it just seems like there was some kind of conflict with the VIA driver and my Radeon card.
Before I was able to uninstall my ATI drivers and gain all but 3D functionality back, but after installing these drivers, everything is 100% back to normal! WOOHOO! I *really* didn't feel like re-formatting my HD again...

Part of the issue has to do with the largesystemcache setting in the registy and the ATI control panel if the setting is enabled you might have corrupt files or maybe file system corruption. The 4.50 drivers mistakenly where made to enable that setting. I read this over at Rage3d, but I do think this is half of the problem people where having.

I also had the never ending disk scan problem!

I fixed this by running CHKDSK /X on each drive from a Safe Mode command window. Note that you may need to move your swap file (and Windows Temp files?) onto a previously scanned partition in order to scan and correct the original swap file partition (if you get my drift).
