Seems that Kyle Bennett over at [H]ardOCP has scoop himself a world exclusive with the news that VIA will be showing off a brand new gaming console.
Here is just about as much scoop as you are going to get before this thing is officially unveiled at CES this week. It seems that VIA is carving out their own segment of the emerging console market under the APEX brand name with the new "ApeXtreme Personal Gaming Console and DVD Player", or PGC.
It will be powered by a near-instant-on version of WinXP (embedded) with Windows Media Player, and as you can obliviously see from the pictures, will have removable media in the form of DVD/CD. We are told the OS will not be "locked down", certainly inviting many modifications by the end user. The video processor behind the box will be VIA's S3 DeltaChrome graphics processor, and VIA 5.1 "Vinyl" audio will supply 5.1 sound.

I hope this doesnt come to the same end as the now Vapourware Phantom console... lets just hope this one is true. Its definitly exiting, and for mainstream market its well worth looking at.. |

This is absolutely going to bomb in the US market. Why? Easy... Soon more and more DVD Stand alone makers will have DivX support and the XBox next will be what the XBox hacked is now. So what market will this thing be targeting? Plus VIA is absolutely crap. |

Well seeing as how the far east has a much higher population than the US maybe VIA isnt bothered. I wish them good luck, hopefully it will do ok and work ok ! |

'VIA is absolutely crap'??????? congratulations mr.donkey poo, what a well constructed argument. I have used VIA products for years and have always found them a decent alternative to Intels stuff. VIA have spent a lot of time building an innovative company up, and look set to continue these innovations, whether this idea bombs or not. They certainly dont need your childish comments. Good luck to them.... |

In reality, this is going to be marketed as a Home Theater PC/game console. VIA is taking the first step and is providing the first (AFAIK) pre-built HTPC. Also, since this is a PC DivX will be able to be installed and I highly doubt that Microsoft will release an Xbox with a Linux kernel installed. Furthermore, VIA is one of the top chip makers in the world. Their Intel solutions have always been good, as have their AMD solutions. Their Vinyl Audio processor rivals the Audigy2's quality and costs much less, and their ITX motherboards with C3 processors are probably the best thing you can get for an HTPC. |

That all american cars isnt it, except they dont look nice... VIA has its good chipsets and its bad, the new K8 chipset is excellent, vinyl audio is not at all bad, deltachriome is an unknown but im sure its fine for a console and id expect it to be more powerful than an XBOX. |

Hey El_JimBob, You don't like my comments then don't ***** read them. Ever heard of the term, "Everyone has an opinion?" Don't like it. Then move on. |

Can't wait to see games running on this thing! LOL The only thing this is going to end up being is a networkable file storage for MP3's and streaming your DVD's off of the HD. As for a gaming machine? ROFL! I'm suprised that Microsoft is allowing this to be honest. The XBox Next is what this machine is going to be able to do. I'll believe ALL OF THIS when it's available for purchase. Otherwise this just ends up being a Phantom Console... |

All I have to say is good luck. VIA will definitely need it. If I were a game manufacturer, I would be saying to myself "Why should I spend time and $$ porting my game over to yet another console, especially by such an unknown (in the console market) company?" Yes, MS was also unknown in the console market, but they had big $$ to lure game companies. Another thing, the market is struggling with three systems. It was said that the market could only support two- so how can it possibly support four? |
