Valve is Shutting Down Over 20,000 Accounts for Illegal CDkey Use

If you know what 5J52E-FVKXV-882FQ-YJXRQ-DOD98 is for and tried it, please try and refrain from being too upset in your posts.

If you don't know what it was for, it was part of a way to steal HL2 which doesn't work anymore.

well, tougher copyprotection means more revenues to the publishers, it's that simple..

they know fans will want the game as soon as it's released....

they know that copyprotection will turn a certain percentage to buy the game instead of the hassle of cracking it just to later find out it's a nuisance trying to patch the cracked game with a legit patch.

they know that without copyprotection, they'd send signals to the masses that they don't care if people copy it.

all in all, copyprotection pays off, even if it's a nuisance... and that's what counts... to lose less money than without protection...

Please.. you are making UT players look stupid.

UT2004 is a multiplayer game, while HL2 is geared completely towards single player.

HL2 is a great game, so is UT.

btw if you were stupid enough to use this exploit on an account WITH a paid game on it.. then you should be hanged.

Please take 2 minutes to create a different steam account and try your experiments on that..

It is your own fault for using it on your main account.

arrrrgggggg *sniff sniff* arrrrggggggggg I am a thief and I got caught *sniff sniff* In my country at certain stores if you don’t like a game you can return it without penalty and get CASH BACK, AND ALL OF IT.
So basically I have legitimately bought 25 games in total with the same $69.95
I can play and finish a game in 7 days of which I am then board of it, or backed it up or whatever.

Any ways the lesson here is Get a Life and not just a half one.

Surely you all have legs? Use them and get a job or study or just BITE ME!

This is fun :)

The whole point about my comment is copy protection does not gain them one red cent it more likely loses them money.

This is because those people that don't buy a game most of them are just people who don't have the money so your just keeping them from playing the game your not losing money because they wouldn't have bought it in the first place...

Also those that like the game will someimes in the future buy it even if they did pirate it originally if you screw with them they won't they will just get a crack anyway and play their games without buying.

They can't seem to figure out that no matter what copy protection it always gets cracked so those that want to get around it will anyway. They however probably do lose legit customers because they hate the fact they can't play the game they just bought because of some lame copy protection their cd player doens't like.

Just think about it those who pirate do so because they don't want to buy are they going to suddenly buy it because you make it harder to get a pirated copy working. Very few people that pirate games don't know about cracks i would bet. So you aren't selling anymore games by including copy protection.

And because those people that copied the game off the Internet wouldn't have bought it in the first place you don't lose that money because you never owuld have gotten it. Putting the lame copy protection in doens't get people to buy your game.

oh yeah and ill stress again it costs them money to actually research the copy protection and put it into practice.... the only thing i agree with is a cd-key to authenticate players it keeps people that didn't buy your game from playing online. Which gives them incentive to buy because its not as easy to get around as copy protection so if they want multiplayer they have to buy the game.

Also all companies with mainly multiplayer centric games should all follow suit with what Unreal Tournament does and that is to stop requiring the cd in the drive when you apply the first patch.

well, to be zynical, you could also apply these questions if someone would kill your mother... sounds hard but the answers would be the same as for hl2...

I bought HL2 an all the rest blah blah..

But I think hl2 was a game that had to be cracked for certain users to even be able to play the game. Yes we are all on the internet but some of my friends just dont have access atm (crappy scotland services) So what are they to do? Only option they have is to pick up a cracked copy for a £5er.. Unless I am wrong and u can enable the retail game with a key and the cd? I think its a real pain in the butt to an steam was full of bugs took me 3 or more attempts to get hl2 unlocked to even make a steam account.. Pish! Then the games got that sound bug innit? Cummon what u been doing the last 6 years?

Well Thats My rant of the day.
