Unwinder's Detection Script: Catalyst 3.5 On Test

Posted by: NewsFactory on: 07/07/2003 01:12 PM [ Print | 5 comment(s) ] · 2483 views

Just got word that Elitebastards.com have thrown up Hanner's Catalyst 3.5 On Test article using Unwinder's Detection scripts on ATI's latest drivers. There's a good bit of thought inside! Benchmarks included.

Recent months have been nothing short of a soap opera for both ATI and Nvidia and the followers of the two companies ? A soap opera that shows no sign of abating. I have no intention of going over the details of recent events yet again, as I?m sure anybody whose been living on planet Hardware recently will be more than aware of all the recent goings on. Instead, I?ll step in to the story at the point of the most recent allegations levelled against the two IHVs in Digit Life?s recent article. For those of you that missed it, Aleksei Nikolaichuk (better known to most as ?Unwinder?, the creator of RivaTuner) set about creating a script to disable the ability of both nVidia?s Detonator and ATi?s Catalyst drivers to detect when specific applications were running , thus eliminating their ability to optimize for those applications in any way.

The outcome of this article left the community with just as many questions, if not more, as it gave us answers. As the test was run with ATI?s Catalyst 3.4 drivers, had anything been changed for the Catalyst 3.5s?

Optimizations?

With the script almost all the scores go up instead of what the script is supposed to do.

And for 3Dmark01, why is there such a hit in GT4, where the nature scene is supposed to be run by Pixel and Vertex Shaders, but on the individual tests the scores are almost equal with or without script.

Or the test is phony or the optimizations there come from another thing than PS and VS.

There's a hit on GT4 of 3dm2k1se because it looks like ATi forgot to remove those "optimizations" from the 3.5 set. ;)

I thought Hanners did a great job on that article, it's looking like the catalyst 3.5 set is pretty clean.

My question now is where is someone doing the same thing with an FX.... ;)

As much as a nice answer that is, you are from EliteBastards. That's like buying a Hyunday and listen to the seller how they have the best cars in the world....just an example, nothing else. ;)

My question stills on the air. I don't understan how can be a specific optimization for 3DMark01 and not for anything else. The test is supposed to check on Shaders optimizations yet on the other Shader tests inside 3DMark01 scores are the same, if not slightly better.

I don't agree on the GF FX drive test, actually I believe someone should create some Cheater of the Year (COTY) award and give it straight to NVidia for their Detonator drivers. No voting, no poll, no jury...they just won it hands down...LOL!! 8-)

Sure they forgot DW, suuure...

Wow, they are trying to get away with that after promising they would get rid of the cheats? Who is worse now?
