THG To Sue AMDMB For Libel?

Posted by: NewsFactory on: 06/30/2003 10:41 PM [ Print | 8 comment(s) ] · 1614 views

Just spotted that [H]ardOCP's Kyle Bennett posted on the THG/AMDMB story that took place at this weekends Million Man Lan 2 in Kentucky, USA.

In true American-like fashion, someone is threatening to sue someone else for libel. If you can't kill 'em, sue 'em, so goes a modern saying. If you remember, we posted earlier today about some drama that unfolded today between two websites. From Omid Rahmat, of Tom's Hardware, in an email regarding AMDMB stated that they would sue Ryan Shrout of AMDMB. Mr. Bennett has offered his assistance, which in fact made matters worse in some respect. Note that either opinion of [H] and THG seems a bit biased...

Libel suits are rarely successful.

A libel suit from an internet argumen will get thrown out because it's freaking stupid.

I agree. Tom's can go to hell for all I care. AMDMB.com is a great site.

Sorry but the facts suggest the `stupidity` lies elsewhere. Someone, anyone deciding to use their position on a website to perpetrate a malicious attack on another should ensure that their `facts` are double, triple checked before expressing them.
This seems to be the tip of a much larger malaise whereby so many people start a website so they must be journalists, and entitled to full journalistic privilege, right?
Well, no. Journalists should be professionally qualified and competent in the discipline before they are accepted as such. I see no indication from anything I have seen on most of these warring sites that there are many, if any, qualified journalists or editors at the helm, just enthusiastic wannabes with latent technical competency, but little in the way of editorial skills.
It should serve as a stark warning that the mere desire to describe oneself as a journalist is NOT sufficient to actually be regarded as one...

Remember, journalistic privilege is exactly that - a privilege, not a right or an entitlement. I dare to suggest that if the accuser in this sorry saga had half an ounce of the editorial skill and professional reputation he THINKS he has, then entry to the event would have been smooth and unruffled. Has he earned the right to be regarded as a journalist? His vitriolic outburst, unsubstantiated claims and allegations suggest that both he and his `editor` if he has one, should consider an alternative career.
Politics, maybe?

I just don't understand the mentality of these big hardware sites.

THG has become the biggest website of its kind, but why??? It's not all that good anymore, is it?

And I am apalled at the fact that AMD let this happen, they must not let this kind of thing happen again.

AMD... If you start to "sell" the rights to information on your products, then it can only hurt you, as you are only here, because us "enthusiasts" are keeping you alive.

Start to pi$$ us off, and you will come to regret it.

I know many "die hard" AMD fans out there, that are more than a little impressed by what Intel are starting to offer, and pulling stunts like this one will push your loyal customers away, because lets face it, if you carry this $hit on, then you are no better than Intel, but have the disposition of selling an inferior product.

Loyaly has to work both ways AMD!

THG has been going downhill for years...does anyone even bother visitng that over-blown advert now?!
What a desperate and feeble attempt at a publicity stunt.
