The Trouble With AVI Movies In Windows XP

Just spotted this bit of Info over at Rojakpot.com
Whenever I click or open certain AVI movies in Windows XP, Windows Explorer would lock up and cause the entire system to come to a standstill. You also cannot edit or delete these AVI movies! Why? Why? Why???! Because this is yet another Windows XP bug. Don't take it the wrong way. I love Windows XP. It's the most stable Windows OS ever. But this bug sure has bugged me (pun intended!) long enough! It's time to fix it once and for all!

argh!!! same happens here, I got terribly nervous when I cannot rename a single AVI file o even delete it!!!!!!! My Workaround that used to work: Start Nero 5.5, and then look for the AVI file in nero explorer, from there you can delete it or rename it without any problem ¿?¿?¿?¿? strange, isn't it? (does't not work with nero 6, at least for me) BaD. |

The best thing to do to manage movie files in XP is not to do it from Explorer. Pretty simple. Once you're there, you won't run into the file being "in use" and not being able to touch it. |

Errr.. probably if this man browsed some Windows Tips websites before, he would've known the cause and the remedy for this problem. The "can't delete/move AVI" phenomenon happens because Windows reads the infos from each AVI file when you select it (for the extended explorer folder view with resolution etc.) during which the file gets locked. Fixing it is simple: Don't let Explorer read the info. Save this as avi.reg and apply it: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTSystemFileAssociations.avishellexPropertyHandler] @="" Voila. |

P.S. Reboot after that, of course... |

actually is much much easier than that just go to START MENU---> RUN and paste this regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll OK and thats it, no more locked avi files |

I know that problem! It happens when the avi file is corrupt or too big. If u cant delete it.. just mark the file, then u will see that your harddrive is working....when its stop reading the u can delete it |

Dude, read the posts, it's not because it's "corrupt or too big". It's because Explorer reads some info from the AVI (resolution, fps...) and it is locked during that. Apply the Registry file i posted or do that other trick from above. |

another solution is not to use explorer .... open command line client switch to the file .... end explorer.exe delete file start it again if there is no way to get it |

This problem got apparent when XP was out, so it's not by any means a new problem. It happens because XP is trying to parse information from a corrupt divx file (perhaps other formats as well). The index and file information of a divx file is in the end of the file and when it's incomplete XP can't find it and then start looking in the whole file. That takes "forever" if the incomplete/corrupt file is big. put this in a file called "whatever.inf", right click it and choose install, and it will be fixed. Other above methods are probably working as well, but this is the one I've used and it does the trick. ; Windows XP explorer movie fix. ; ; WARNING - Use this file at your own risk. ; ; Executing this file will remove a registry key which makes explorer load shmedia.dll. ; Simply put, this removes the annoying "permission denied" errors when trying to ; move/copy/delete AVI files. ; ; To use this fix, right-click on the file and select install. Done. ; ; Information about the registry key from multiple sources. ; Inf-file compiled by Moo (2002-03-22). ; [version] signature="$Windows NT$" [DefaultInstall] DelReg = Reduce.Reg [Reduce.Reg] HKLM, "SOFTWAREClassesCLSID{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}InProcServer32" |

I had the same kind of problem, I found that it was the xvid codec that I had installed. When Windows tried to produce a thumbnail it crashed explorer. My fix was to do a search in google for a 'stable xvid codec', once I found one and downloaded it, no more problems in Windows. |

I also met that kind of problem before and the way I used to fix that problem was to uninstall the XviD then go to windows folder in your C:/ drive then go into system32 folder and try to find a file name that have XviD in it. If you find that file just have to delete it if the windows not allow it to delete just cut and paste it into different folder first before install XviD codec again. Try using XviD 1.0 Beta 2 it work quite fine for me and I think you should instal ffdshow filter and dsp2dshow filter it will help a lot. |

A quick and simple fix for this was to 'rollup' that Details slide on the left-side of a file window under XP. But, then again, I like this registry fix. |
