You might think this hardware business is as clean as fountain-water, you get what you see not like that software smuk(wait i m also in that business); but wait everything might/or is about to change, and the grim thing is it might happen even without our knowledge. Thomas C greene of the The Register.com takes a look at intel's ....

...Upcoming technology "La Granda Scheme". Its a chilling story on how a simple code in hardware could our lives. Thomas does'nt hold his views on this one. A must read for everyone. Here is a small snip:-"You've bought some music and you want to listen to the MP3 on your computer and the CD on your DiscMan. Forget it. There will be no more ripping and burning except under conditions of which the labels approve, like if you pay a surcharge, say. This technology is just too well suited to industry extortion for that not to be a significant driving force behind it.

. Here's a simple example: let's say studio X sells you a CD for $15.00 with no copying permitted. Perhaps for $20.00 they'll sell you almost the same CD, but one which can be copied twice (allowing for the accidental loss of the copied content); but of course you won't be able to duplicate the data files. Your trustworthy set-top box masquerading as a computer simply won't do it, and the bloody CD won't copy to an untrusted machine at all. " I think La Grande must have already been burnt into P-4's and its just a matter of activating it through software.Hey You will never know until it happens...

So Warp2..Register.com :-Intel's new chip for security Renaissance.

lagrande isn't a monitoring or digital right chip.
it is the chip intel is building for microsofts next gen windows, that is able to shield against buffer overflows and run insecure programms in a hardware sandbox to shield the user against viruses and other things...

Actually it can be used for DRM purposes, but it can also be 100% disabled.

What thereg hasn't talked about recently is that AMD is also in on this big chip thing....they have yet to officially announce it, though.
