id Software and HardOCP have teamed up to help answer your hardware questions. We're publishing this guide before DOOM 3 goes for sale, so you will know beforehand what to expect in terms of gameplay immersion by your current hardware. We also want to help maximize the overall DOOM 3 experience for those of you that have been waiting for the opportunuity to upgrade.
This guide is not an attempt to crown a king in the realm of hardware, and no direct comparisons are going to be drawn on any of our graphs. Our goal here is to help you understand where your system is positioned in terms of playing DOOM 3 and to help you choose an upgrade that will make a real difference and offer you the greatest improvement in gameplay for the money spent.
In the world of gaming, id Software has been credited with many firsts, and they are about to achieve one more. id wanted the minimum required computer specifications for DOOM 3, or the ?min spec system? requirements, to reflect a system that can actually provide what the game has to offer. Many times we've seen min spec systems not come close to providing a good gaming experience, but that will not be the case with DOOM 3. The min spec system outlined on the DOOM 3 packaging is very playable, and we will prove that to you in our guide. This alone should let many of you know whether or not you have a DOOM 3 capable system. The fact is that id Software has done a tremendous job in optimizing DOOM 3 for computers that are two years old or older. If you have a 1.5GHz Pentium and a 3D card that has been made in the last couple of years, you should be able to enjoy the DOOM 3 experience as it was meant to be.

Nice - NICE! This is exactly what I was hoping for when they released the framerates for the X800s and Geforce 6800's. While they obviously don't have every system (for example my P4 3.2 on the MSI 865Neo and a 9800Pro), this is a good guage for many of us to see what WE will be seeing from Doom. I was hoping to play at 1024X764 with the settings cranked and it looks like that should be a reality. If that's the case, I don't see myself upgrading any components any time soon  |
