The Great HDCP Fiasco

Looking forward to HD-DVD and Blu-Ray playback now that you have your GeForce 6 or 7, or ATI AVIVO Radeon? It?s too bad. None of the current cards from ATI or NVIDIA available at retail will support HDCP. Yep, you read that right: that $500 video card you just bought doesn?t support HDCP!

LOL!
Makes me feel good that I held back and just bought a 6800GS for my AGP system instead.

Yeah, right now seems to NOT be the time for a big upgrade. Too many standards changing right now. Everything from the DVD formats, to the 2-video cards fiasco, to that whole "physics card" thing, to Vista looming.

You know what.. my €600 tft doesn't support HCDP. I don't give rat's ass, I have 42" HCDP/HDTV/WHATEVER tv in my living room. I don't even want to watch movies from my pc screen.

Agreed. You never want to upgrade hardware when MS is getting ready to release a new OS. Especially with DirectX 10 coming as well. I figure my Socket A 3200+ and 6800GS will hold me solid until then. I sure as heck wouldn't drop 700-800 on dual 7800's right now. I'm waiting to see what will be out once DirectX 10 comes out now.

I'm a little surprised they say it's a secret and a fiasco. I thought most people knew that the current cards don't fully support Vista. That's why some have chosen not to upgrade, making comments saying they're waiting for DX10/Vista cards before upgrading. I guess people that don't frequent any tech forums or care about such things might not know but then they probably don't care about HDCP support anyway. So, I fail to see the big deal.

Well, a lot of people are interested in it...so it's a pretty big selling point.
I'm with you, but what about college kids in a dorm, people on airlines, etc. ? It's a valid feature.
It's partially the same reason people still play games on the PC when they can play games on a console.

Actually, looks like I failed to see the big deal b/c I didn't read through the entire article.
