The Great DOOM3 and ATI OpenGl Drivers Controversy

Posted by: Newsfactory on: 08/08/2004 02:37 AM [ Print | 23 comment(s) ] · 5250 views

I made a small analysis about DOOM3 and different ATI OGL implementations of the OGL driver. Hope you like it.

There has been quite a controversy about DOOM3 and ATI OpenGl drivers. We know already that the ATI driver is not up to par with NVIDIA?s best, kind of like the other side of the coin. The driver is functional, and lately it has become quite stable, but the performance has always been questioned.

I would hope at first a game that was optimized for nvidia would run a little better than ATi, but it wont be long before there is a WHQL driver from ATi , its not very often ATi releases a beta driver I tryed the 4.8's, 4.9's but im back to the 4.7's and I dont have any problems with any of the three drivers. By the way does nvidia have any drivers that are WHQL approved anymore :]

You ATI guys really make me laugh. I have used both. Nvidia has always been better with OpenGL then ATI.

You seem to think any time a OpenGL game comes out and runs better on Nvidia that there was a conspiracy to optimize performance for Nividia. But any time a game comes out that runs better on ATI you say that just shows the card is better.

Do you really think they are going to program so one card sucks. Let me see, make less money by not selling copies of the game to ATI owners. You don't really believe that happens do you. If you could get it done, It would take more then a few hundred thousand or a few million.

Well enjoy your fantasies and rants that your card is great and everything else sucks but what you have. Most people in your age group are usually self deluded and suffer from e-penis envy.

God the way you guys cry and whine about everything is kind of sad. Just buy what you like, others will do the same, Enjoy it. If not, then switch to something else.

Yes, NVIDIA does release WHQL drivers. Silly statement/question, really. Yes, many driver releases get leaked that may work better on some things than others. Many people I know don't update between NVIDIA WHQL releases and it's a very long wait for them.

The 61.76 drivers were WHQL. The 61.77 drivers were not. Let's ask the question as to why. MS released DX9c and the following day NVIDIA released the 61.77 drivers that added compability with DX9c. It's not like WHQL support could be accomplished in 1 day.

I'm not going to sit here and say NVIDIA rules or that ATI rules and frankly I think anyone who sits and makes statements like that needs to grow up. The simple fact, however, is it has been clearly been shown time and time again that ATI has issues with their OpenGL support. That is ATI's fault and not NVIDIA's. The ATI fans stupid enough to believe it's a conspiracy need to focus more on the fact that the fault is with ATI.

Guys,

I don't honestly have any idea about what is actually happening to the community right now.

Let's face it, before d3, ati was ruling the vga market by some. Futhermore, on 9800 Pro and 5900xt, benchmarks are almost equal. So the lead is applying to the 6800s only.

Fact is:

With Nvidia (6800) you get:

Superior fps in d3/opengl.

With ATI you get:

Superior fps in d3d (still 85% of all games)
Better IQ in 2D and TV Out.

Now d3 has been released, suddenly ati became crap, just because of _one_ game?

If I run d3 on my p4 2.8 1GB Ram in 9800 Pro, i get about 40FPS average in High settings.

For single-player, i experience a very smooth and great looking game.

So should i be bothered because 6800 owenrs, err, have it smooth as well? ;-)

Let's all cool down and see what's awaiting us with the upcoming HL2 and Stalker. Maybe the cards gets mixed again the by some, maybe not.

It's just not worth the headache by now...

My two cents.

Kind regards.

Yes, they do. Heck, they even have recent WHQL Win98/Me drivers.... 4 months after ATI told us that they're stopping production of said drivers because Microsoft won't WHQL them.

Not that I'm implying that ATI would ever say or do anything less than honest, you understand.

DOOM3, a bunch of aliens/monsters running around that you have to blast to bits....... wow never seen that before... The only reason the original game was any good was because it was a new idea. I really don't know what all the fuss is about!!!! and YES I have played it :) and NO I won't be buying it.

I'm not the biggest fan of d3 either, but i have to admit, the athmosphere which is created by the visuals and the exceptional sounds are very creepy (to me).

I think this makes d3 worth a look, especially if you like horror movies :-)

doom3 is the only other game than half-life sp that has actually made me physically jump while playing it. that's how good the atmosphere is to me.

lol half life made you jump?

Anyway I think The Suffering is a much better horror oriented game. Im not saying Doom 3 isnt scary at parts, its just that there are only certain parts during the game..

Plus monsters walking up behind you kinda gets boring after a while..

The story and everything is good though, but try out the suffering or undying if you want a nice horror game. :)

Half Life 1 made me not only jump, it made me throw my keyboard to the right, my mouse to the left, and then I refused to play the game for 10 minutes...

It was my first meeting with a Barnacle. :P

I don't know what this guy is talking about but all of my OpenGL games..Doom3,Savage and RTCW seen very good improvements with the 4.9 betas. I see no reason to cry foul saying that these are Doom3 specific and optimized. It's a bunch of garbage.

this is not about the last 2 years, this is about 6800 vs X800. Typically you'll see that in 85% of the dx games the 6800 cards are faster. Only in 1600x1200 with high levels of aa and af, the X800 cards are faster.
In OGL even a 6800nonultra/nonGT can keep up with a X800XT.
That's the reality. Learn to live with it.

I have seen reviews where X800 is faster.
I have seen reviews where 6800 is faster.
I have seen reviews where X800 and 6800 is on the same level.

My conclusion: None are faster, they are equal.

Just becouse you only read reviews that votes in your favor (you WANT to believe ATI is still THE KING), dont mean its true. In fact, most of the later reviews have proven that the simple '6800' (non-ultra) can surpass Platinum Edition in some tests.

Equal level on D3D, Nvidia leads on OpenGL, no PS3 on x800.

"(you WANT to believe ATI is still THE KING)"

LOL, guys, now it gets ridiculous.

I don't really care about FPS _as long_ the game runs smooth.

I care about Image Quality & Power Consumption & Price though != 6800s

Yes, I am a casual gamer :]

I 'd never pay 550$ for a vga just to be king for the day.

Besides you don't have better 'proof' than me obviously, just 'caps lock' ;-)

You'll get the point.

Calm down, sit back, relax.

Forget what you heard, and find some up to date information.
Everything you mentioned in your latest message are newbie misconceptions and rumours that have been proven false by many professional testers.

There are no iq difference between 6800 and x800. This have already been tested and proved by almost every test out there.

6800 requires no more power consumption than what you may find in an average setup. The initial rumours where proved false at an early stage.

The price is not that much higher. The longer survivaltime of 6800 makes up for it. No point in wasting $ on a x800 that is out of date before christmas.

I do not "pick side" between nvidia and ati, but I also do not spread lies about any of them on the net.
