The GeForce 6800's Video Processor is Broken

If you already didn't know, but Nvidia's GeForce 6800 AGP series of Card's may have had almost all video acceleration in hardware disabled by an internal flaw. The only way to fix this flaw is with a new set of Drivers that should be released soon and a copy of DVD decoder that Nvidia charge 20 bucks for.
First check out TechReport for more Info on the flaw! Then you might want to sign up to the nvidia DVD decoder petiton to try and get the DVD decoder from nvidia for free for the owners of 6800 card's.
We're a little slow on the uptake around here when it comes to some news stories. For instance, various pockets of the web have been abuzz about some video acceleration deficiencies of the NV40 GPU powering all GeForce 6800-series graphics cards for a few weeks now. This morning, we received mail for TR reader Henrik S. asking this:

how is it 'broken' when it's just a matter of being unsupported in current OFFICIAL drivers, and only one current application having been coded to support it yet (unsuprisingly nvidia's own) |

I wonder just how many people realize how much BS this is? If the hardware decoder was working and only needed a driver update, why then would one need a software decoding codec in order to then get it working again? Thats removes the purpose of the said hardware decoder . The nVidia DVD Decoder also is for MPEG2 ONLY which they claim the 6800 can do fine, another contradiction. No more nVidia cards for me, I'm sorry. |

I would've like a functioning encoder as well. I don't watch movies on the computer, so that's not a problem. But nVidia have another scandal on their hands unless they go out with the information in public with a GOOD explanation of it all, which I doubt they will. |

It's really a matter of what you do with the video card. I play movies and a lot of DivX anime (DivX encoder and family are affected by the issue at hand), and do a bit of encoding to, so yes this will piss me off...but for the ones who do not do these kind of things and just play games, then there is no problem. Oh, and if some of you are really affected by this situation, I feel very sorry for you if you have a Prescott running on that machine. |
