S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl Preview

GameSpot have thrown up their new preview of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl.

With Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 dominating the landscape for PC first-person shooters this year, THQ and developer GSC GameWorld recently announced that they were pushing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl to early 2005. Part of the reason for this was to give GSC some more time to polish this ambitious and beautiful-looking first-person shooter, but it also didn't hurt that by delaying to 2005.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will avoid being released next to Doom 3 and (most likely) Half-Life 2. We had the chance to play some four-player deathmatch of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. at THQ's press event this evening, which also represented some of our first hands-on time with the game. We came away impressed with the graphical prowess and smoothness of the game, though we should note that we didn't get a chance to play or see the vaunted single-player campaign.

I'm really looking forward to this one. In a way it looks like what I personally envisioned for Doom 3, rather than running around in the dark with a flashlight.

How in the world can this be what you were hoping for in Doom 3? Have you even played the original Doom games? They are NOT about free-roaming terrains and day-night cycles; they're about chainsaws and demonic invasions and arcade-like gameplay. It's not as if Id let you to believe Doom 3 something it isn't.

I hope you're being sarcastic!

The original Doom was all about killing thousands of monsters in a base...as well as plenty of large, open-style maps...especially in Doom 2. I'm not sure where the whole idea that Doom was 'scary' came from, but it's no more scary than Serious Sam or any other game that throws hundreds of enemies at you at once.

Doom3 is claustrophobic and dark with only an occasional monster that pops out to supposedly "frighten" you.

They're only showing the deathmatch portion at Gamepot, but the multiplayer and single players are MUCH more of a Doom throw-back than Doom 3...much like Painkiller is at times. STALKER's single player mode has been described by most people that have seen it as being a modernized version of Doom, but with new effects. I like Doom 3 for what it is, but it's nothing like the original games.

hi,
yeah, i have to agree with you there. Ive played doom3 till around 3/4 of the way through, its not as much of a chore as i thought, in fact im quite enjoying it, i just wish it looked a load better than it does(xbox port i think). The alpha of stalker looked amazing with ace lighting and very realistic colours and terrain, not to mention all that lovely fauna and flora. This hopefully will be the same quality as half life 2. Im sure HL2 is gunna be incredible.

You never played the original dooms at night with all lights turned off, right (actually I believe you dont do it with doom 3 either)?
I remember very well playing doom 1 and 2 all day long, after I came out of school. at daylight it wasnt very scary, it was a simple shooter. but there were still moments when I almost fell out of my chair.
but at night I didnt even dare to play it, especially maps I didnt know completely or which had those "lights out" effect.
Of course if youre some smartass who just recently played doom 1 & 2 for the first time on an 3D emulator or similar, its not scary of course... duh.

and btw I just saw a gameplay video of stalker today. I surely hope its still in early alpha phase because the AI was dumb as hell and the controls and gameplay even more simple than painkiller. not to mention the idiotic looks of the models and the over-made fantasy features. the scenery does look sweet tho. still I am pretty sure operation flashpoint 2 will blow it away lefthanded. 2.5 km² isnt that big. operation flashpoint 1 has a max. visibility range that is double as much.

the annoying thing about doom3 is the flashlight, i hope in the future we have better weapsies and can at least hold a handgun and torch at the same time(without the hack)
