Matt Burris from 3DGpu today has some neat info on STALKER: Oblivion Lost currently in development at GSC Game World. After an editorial about the 'Nvidia - The way it's meant to be played' marketing campaign, he wrote to GSC because they initially stated that the game was developed on ATI R300 hardware.

Matt received a replay from GSC's Oles V. Shishkovtsov: We use all hardware for development of Stalker, although most are NVIDIA. We will produce a game with the best quality, compatibility, and performance on all supported hardware (T&L or better).
Here are the general things. As a programmer, I need to get access to the latest hardware and talk to it's manufacturers, otherwise we may get way behind the competition. I want to give credit to NVIDIA for agreeing to be our technical partner and render us this kind of assistance (we contacted NVIDIA and ATI for several months, but ATI did not respond). NVIDIA offers me early hardware and very good support. Prior to GeForceFX I worked with Radeon 9700 but I am currently developing the Stalker engine on NV35. Naturally, such close work with NVIDIA engineers allows me to come up with better optimizations and support the new technologies of NVIDIA boards. In Stalker you'll be able to play fine on NVIDIA and ATI hardware--the gameplay and run stability should be the same. On ATI boards Stalker will run fast, but on NVIDIA boards it will run even faster, plus gamers will get a set of unique effects, namely due to close work with the company enginers and support of NVIDIA hardware features. Uh oh, I smell some hot flamage... Source: 3DGpu.com

ATi has caught up to nevidia in several aeras, namely speed and Drivers, but some areas still lacks behind, they need to make more of an effort to make their platform the promary development platform... |

the problem with ATI is, that it indeed has some advantages over current nvidia hardware moment but that they can lose it quite soon and quite dramatically. Don't get me wrong. I'm happy that the ATI managed to climb out of its shadow and currently being a major player in graphiccard market. But they almost have no chance to keep up with the even more powerful and ressourcefull nvidia company. Indeed, I believe that ATI will get a major drawback and many ATI owners will run over to nvidia again if nvidia gets is ass moving and releases again something really fast like we were used to. As far as I heard now, the nv35 which will be announced in May, is currently noticeable faster than the Radeon 9800 (just look at what the Stalker developper had to say) and probably nvidia will release with its nv35 again driver set which is not only 100% stable and compatible with every game out there as all the latest drivers but also offers image quality and speed ahead of any competition. Don't already write nvidia down. It's far too early for this. They are working to get their performance crown back and probably it's not going to be pleasant for ATI. |

So they can get an NV35 to a developer now but you won't be able to physically buy one for how long? 6 months? Think about the leaf blower, sorry I mean 5800 Ultra. |

I hope advanced effects isn't like sqare boxes representing orbs of glowing lights and non-shadows like nvidia cards when they render splinter cell |

Wrong. Nvidia wasn't about to get working silicon for the NV30 until December, People got working boards in late January and the public had it in early to mid March (though in low quantities). Now think of the relationship Nvidia has going with IBM now... I think the NV35 is pretty close to hitting the market. This is why I'm sitting with my 9700 pro and not even thinking of touching the 9800 pro OR the 5800 ultra. |

that's true, I own a GF4 TI 4600 (bought before the 9700 was announced) and I already knew last year that I would be skipping the nv30 and wait directly for the nv35 which I will buy when released. The first generation of a new architecture (like the nv30) is almost always doomed to fail. It's just when the revised core comes out (the nv35) when it starts to get interesting. Same thing with the first P4 Willamette, it was a great lackluster |

Hey, I have that problem on my Radeon 9500 pro, I was thinking it was an ATI feature. Turning off fsaa fixes it for me. |

I agree with that and i will be going for a NV35 as soon as their put. Nvidia has lost the lead, but sometimes thats an advantage... take stock and then come back with a much better product than the NV30 |

Funny is, this game was mostly developed on R9700 pro |

no, not mostly but only for several months. The developping of STALKER began with nvidia cards and as it seems now it also will end with the help of nvidia card. Only the middle part of the developping time has been done using the 9700... |
