Moving to enhance its PlayStation 3 game console, Sony on Wednesday plans to announce new online capabilities for it, meant to draw gamers into Sony's cyberspace community and allow them to share entertainment content they have created, a la YouTube.
The centerpiece, a new service called PlayStation Home, is to become available to consumers in the fall, said senior game industry executives, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the plans. PlayStation Home is meant to build on and surpass somewhat similar offerings from Sony's competitors Microsoft and Nintendo by allowing users to create persisting online identities that record players' achievements in different games. As players progress through a game, they will unlock various virtual prizes that they can then show off to friends and rivals, the executives said. Read more at News.com

The PS3 started off slowly, but Sony's getting their ducks in a row finally. I don't think it'll catch up to the other 2 systems any time soon, but this is very cool. They'd made a promise of an Xbox Live style environment at no charge and that's pretty much where this is headed. |

ehh...I just hope they don't spin it as being "fresh" and "original" b/c it isn't. While the whole "Playstation Home" idea is neat...I would still want the ability to message and communicate with my buddies both from the Media Bar and in any game. |

Supposedly that's in the works, too. A Sony rep said that the PS button (which right now just exits games and controllers) could be used to access a more full featured menu in the future. When asked about it working like Live, with a universal friends/communication list I think the guy just smiled or something like that. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard, though. I know with the next 2 updates we're supposed to get DVD scaling and background downloading, so they're at least paying attention. It took MS a while to get XBL where it is today, but it's become the 360's best feature. I like the 360 OS and features more than Windows :P |

That's my point...Sony acts like "yea look at what WE have now" or "look at what WE are working on" like its some new thing. It can't be THAT hard to implement the ability to chat and message with people at any time. They don't get a pass in my book b/c it was something that was done from day one by its competitor (which is supposedly a less powerful system according to Sony.) The same is said for background downloading...if the system is THAT powerful it should be able to download a measly 10MB-600MB file in the background without any problems. |

Yes, Sony makes it sound like something "new and revolutionary" while it's just a rehash of current technologies and services. It's not a bad thing, just being hyped a bit. Besides, I doubt it will help make PS3 the leading console. In fact, I can't see the PS3 run past neither the 360 nor the Wii. In fact, the Wii will probably pass the 360 by fall (if not earlier) even though the 360 had a year extra on the market. But that's not what the article was about so sorry for going off-topic.. |

That's the thing, the PS3 is definitely more powerful than the 360.... unless we are talking about graphics. That's the one thing that MS can be proud of; having a better GPU than any of the other competitors. |
