Refresh Rate Fix for Nvidia Detonator 40.41

X-bios have post a guide that will hopefully simplify the new hexadecimal system of setting Refresh Rates in Detonator 40.41 ! Here's a snip.

Now, to eliminate the Win2K/XP refresh rate problem we want to specify custom refresh rates with the corresponding resolutions and bit depths. In other words we only want Windows to use the HIGHEST refresh rate supported by our monitor in any given mode, not the LOWEST as it will if left to it's own devices. We do this by adding '80**' to the hexadecimal refresh rate.

Here's a little something they don't tell you.

1) The standard refresh rate modes have their own method of being entered into the registry. 60,70,72,75,85,100,120,140, etc.

With the normal modes, you can specify supported mode ranges. If you want to say, support 85-120Hz for 800x600, you would enter S 800x600=70;

And don't even get me started on the horizontal and vertical spanning modes.

Not to mention, a little seomthing ELSE they don't tell you for the really advanced freaks, is that you can use their method to apply custom refresh rate modes. For those that know how monitors work, you understand that the default modes are sometimes not the highest your monitor supports at that resolution. For example, my monitor really does 1280x960@84Hz, but the default mode is 75. You can now force the actual modes. I forced mine to 82, as I did not want to damage the monitor with 84 since 640x480 really supports 168 but for some reason only works with 160.

82Hz is a VERY large difference from 75 in terms of image quality, but that is what these new drivers allows you to do. NVRT WILL support this ability and give complete custom control over the modes your monitor runs at.

um... refresh rate affects image quality? Maybe in the sense that your eyes would get less tired gazing at 82 hz over 75, but the image wouldn't actually look any better in the quality/detail department.

When the monitor displays a slight fluttering of the image, that is 'image quality'...image stability. The quality of the image that is on the screen. Image quality can mean a number of things pertaining to how the overall picture LOOKS on the screen.

At 82Hz, this fluttering is not seen, while at 75, it is.

Therefore, image quality *IS* improved.

This is _Legion_ from X-BIOS. I wrote the article so people could fix specifically the Win2K/XP refresh rate issue so none of us have to play our OpenGL games at 60Hz. As we all know, the 40.41 includes it's own RRFix for Direct3D. If they've done it for one, they will do it for the other. Hopefully with a future Detonator release there will be no need for any of this. Didn't I just see something here about the problem being fixed in WinXP SP1?

It's not fixed in SP1, I assure you.....I've already been done and tested that. It's not in the hotfix list, either.

It doesnt have a refresh fix for Direct3D, that does not work either. heh.

Maybe not for you, it works for me dickhead. Works for others too. If you can't get it to work you must be doing something wrong. :-P
