Just got word from Dave Baumann over at Beyond3D that their review of ATi's Radeon X800 PCI express graphics card is out!
ATI?s X800 graphics processors, based on the R420 chip, were introduced recently and testing indicated that while its performance certainly wasn?t lacking, its feature-set didn?t differ significantly from the previous generation of R300 products. Indeed it?s become clear that ATI?s primary focus from this generation has been the transition from AGP to PCI Express, which begins with the introduction of Intel?s 915 and 925 platforms.
In an effort that has likely seen their engineers and Fab partners keeping very busy, not only have ATI produced the new R420 chip, but also RV370, RV380 and R423 over the past few months, with the latter three parts all supporting a native PCI Express interface. While the majority of these parts are aimed squarely at the OEM space, if anything is likely to provide retail consumers with reasons to upgrade to the PCI Express platform high end graphics is likely to one, hence R423?s importance in both the OEM and retail space.
R423 is the direct equivalent of R420 and, as such, the naming conventions between the PCI Express R423 based products and the AGP R420 based products stay the same, albeit ATI themselves are only introducing one product that overlaps both lines the Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition. In this review we are looking at the middle of the range product, the Radeon X800 XT, using the new PCI Express interface.
