They both install files that are copyrighted and require a license to use by Apple and RealMedia. They seem to be the exact same files as in the retail ($) versions. If the authors of the Alternatives pay a licence fee is anybody's guess. Seems doubtful since the programs are free. As to whether Apple or RealMedia give a hoot? They obviously know about these programs but so far choose not to take legal action.

#63538 Posted on: 12/07/2005 03:11 PM We are removing both today. Quicktime Alternative is being packed with a serial code for the Pro version. While most of us only need the free version, this makes it illegal beyond a doubt.

#63540 Posted on: 12/07/2005 07:48 PM There were a few versions where they stopped including a QT Pro Serial with QT alternative but it seems to be back in again now. I don't know about all the using files without permission etc, but that's pretty illegal

#63541 Posted on: 12/07/2005 09:46 PM It's legal as long as they're just giving you the codecs. The Pro actually has additional features (they they have it install with a pro serial), so this item is a little shady, no matter how useful and nice it might be.
