PowerVR Series 5 Is A PixelShader 3.0 VPU

If still another proof was required that the in-development PowerVR Series 5 (Series 3 = KYRO I/II/SE, Series 4 = finished, but never hit store shelves because of STMicro's omission as a chip manufacturer) VPU actually equals a Pixel and Vertex Shader 3.0 capable hardware piece then PowerVR Technologies - a division of Imagination Technologies Ltd. - has revealed that fact alone by some new developer relations 3D demo examples. This puts PowerVR technically on the same level with the upcoming next-gen accelerators ATI R420 and Nvidia's NV40. We can (safely) assume that the new techdemos are pinpointing in which direction PowerVR has tuned their VPU development process. The company also seems to have extended the "deferred rendering" (deferred rendering technology dramatically increases the efficiency of the 3D engine for maximum performance beyond standard z-culling technology. By maximizing effective bandwidth, deferred rendering does not leave extreme gamers short during peak 3D performance levels) concept to "deferred shading" and this to an extent where they are able to present a working demo of it. Now where do you run PS 3.0 demos on? PS 3.0 capable hardware...

Hmm, the Geforce, Geforce2, Geforce3 and Geforce 4 cards cards range from DirectX6 to DirectX8, arent DirectX9, yet they can all play games using Directx9 (maybe a bit slow some of them How is it that PowerVR are unable to support their older cards, yet NVidia, ATI etc etc all can. I personally will never put my faith in them again. They are not worthy of faithful followers, we have been sold some dud products and those that did work lost support. |

"How is it that PowerVR are unable to support their older cards, yet NVidia, ATI etc etc all can." Budget? Technology? nVidia's cards are all based on the same technology, updated until death do us part. Kyro-tech lost support? Dud product? Talking about the Kyro's? Guess you never had a Kyro I/II. You can't compare a GeForce1/2 with a Gf3/Gf4 (except the crappy MX-stuff). There's STILL support for the Kyro-series, otherwise we wouldn't be here commenting. And there are plenty of followers even though that has got nothing to do with it. The Series 3 has been the best PVR-designed chip to date and it's over 6 nVidia-generations since it was released, still it's useful for people. What I'm interested in is who's manufacturing and releasing cards based on Series 5 chips. ps. I overclocked my K2 to death. Since then I've had both a GF4Ti and now a 9800Pro. But if Series5 is released some time early next year, I'll move to that since of all cards (voodoo, geforce, radeon, kyro) I liked the Kyro most. Not because of it's blazing performance, but because of it's stability and overall "feel". |

i know, its funny how rumour can become fact so quickly on the net. I tend not to believe something until i hear it from a RELIABLE source or until its actually made public by the company or person concerned. DX9.1 is a fact.. dets 50s will fix everything is also fact... cat 3.8s overheat cards, thats a fact as well... Ok i have a new one, HL2 is out monday !!! LOL |

"But if you just happen to have the slightest idea about the current graphiccard market you will know that the nv40 and R420 will have PS/VS 3.0 support. But how can you enable this when the the current DX version (9.0b) doesn't expose version 3?" umm r420/nv40 wont be out for a good while - remember how 9700 was out before dx9 runtime, equally ms can release dx9.1 when they damn well please, with or without supporting hardware being out yet. and you can still be a hardware developer and develop for the 9.1 satandard when the runtimes isnt publicly availible yet. i suggest you visit the clue-box and get one. |

erm read again. You'll see I have a Kyro II and had PowerVR PCX1 and PCX2 before it, thats what we're discussing. Not sure where you base your assumptions from. I am commenting on this as a purchaser and owner of the PowerVR series of cards. Each one has left a bitter taste in my mouth. This taste seems to appeal to some people. I have an 'old' Geforce 2 card and blow me if it isnt still supported! I'd rather buy from a company that supports their products seeing as everybody else does. My machine is stable when it runs the things it is told to. With a Kyro II in your system, thats not what happens. There are things you cant run or have a tough time getting to run. I like enjoying my computing experience |

Needless to say, we've had two entirely different experiences with the Kyro2. I never had the any of the earlier stuff though, I was a Voodooite. |

Why no DX9.1? Well this is how it was explained to me. DX8 included Ps1.1 to 1.3 , but didnt have any 1.4 in it at all, there was no spec at the time. DX8.1 included PS1.4 which was ratified after DX8 was released. DX9 already includes PS2.0 and PS3.0 but 3.0 is not enabled. Because adding PS3.0 wouldnt add anything new to the standard (its already there) it wont be a major update that why it wont be DX9.1 just DX9.0c or d or whatever. You only get a number change when the spec changes and it isnt changing. |

Geez, what a bunch of children. Does it really matter if someone refers to the DirectX Development team as DX Team or Team DX, or someone else? & who really cares about whether it'll be called DirectX 9.1 or DirectX 9.0 Revision Pixel & Vertex Shader 3.0 Enabled Build F. |
