Plextor. Plextor, Plextor? Does this brand require any advertisement or explanations? The brand name speaks for itself ? Plextor have always been among the leaders when we talk about optical storage.
The company was one of the first to announce 4x DVD recording drives (504A), and also the first to release on the market an 8x DVD-R drive (708A). Now we have their 12x model in HWspirit's test lab, read how did the Plextor PX-712A DVD Writer perform.

A tad bit late on a review of the PX-712A since I just bought a PX-716A at Best Buy the other day.

In a word the 716A get's a WOW!!!! But you better buy some good quality DVD's for this baby. It does not like the cheaper ones like Memorex. I have to burn these at a lower speed to get them to read at all on any DVD player. I now use Maxell which I probably should have used in the first place. Using DVD+R's btw.

Personally I will ONLY buy Plextor Drives PERIOD!!!

Even if it's just a CD-ROM - this is the only company to go with for these types of devices.

If you want a burner that will burn perfectly, buy an NEC. Yes, they'll burn on the Memorex crap and still be readable. NEC has the best quality burn method and is far cheaper.

Firstly, it burns OK only at 4x. Plextor got back to me and said a new firmware coming out shortly should fix this. Plextor still does not recommend Memorex for discs that you want to last a long time.
OK for data but for things like personal fotos or videos you should use a higher quality disc like Maxell, Verbatim, T-Y, etc.

Secondly, the Japanese get way to much of my money these days. I'd rather seen Belgium get a little of it :-)

So you are willing to pay more for a crappier product? OK! I've got this "New Folder" on my Desktop that I want to sell to you! $200 OK with you?
