Today one of the largest open source projects saw the light of day in form of the final release version 1.0. OpenOffice is based on StarOffice code released by Sun and it's major highlights are that it is platform independent and supporting a broad variety of languages.

OpenOffice was developed in 18 months and is compiled of more than 7.5 million lines of code. OpenOffice comes complete with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and graphics capabilities. Openoffice supports a variety of file formats including Microsoft Office. It runs on multiple operating systems, including the Solaris Operating Environment, Microsoft Windows and Linux.
