We can today reveal that in a briefing with NVIDIA we have been informed that Soundstorm, the popular NVIDIA sound technology is dead. This has been confirmed to us whilst talking about the NVIDIA nForce 4 SLi (P4 Edition).

I guess that sucks. While Creative seems to finally have made a decent card (Audigy 2 zs), with no major consumer level competition I can see us slipping back to the days of the Live.
Oh well.

Wrong on all counts. Plus, Creative is coming out with a PCI-E soundcard very soon...

Don't hit out on the Live! card.

When it arrived in late 1997/ early 1998, NOTHING on the planet could come close to it for both price AND performance.
Now, SEVEN years later, and my SBLive Live Gold + newer Livedrive 2, is STILL going strong. AND I'm using the very latest Audigy 2 ZS drivers.
Now, name a piece of hardware, with the same lifespan, and is able to use today's modern drivers ?

As nice as the Soundstorm was (I never bothered with my old NForce2- I used an Audigy) it WAS a costly addon to board makers, more so in this extremely fierce competitive market.

Now, an addon PCI Soundstorm would be nice. But lets face it, it ain't going to happen.

And as much as I hate Creative as the next person, The new Audigy 2 cards ARE nice cards. It's just a shame that Creative can't see fit to make unified drivers that work on ALL their cards. Even though the new drivers and software (to some extent) work well with the Live cards.

Can you explain why Im wrong please?

I know the same chip is used in SBlive, audigy and audigy 2..

Plus the same drivers for audigy 2 zs work for sblive. Just miss out on some hardware decoding and extra channels.

You know that ancient sound tech couldn't even save them from bankruptcy right?

NOBODY cares.

Creative, SBLive, Audigy, are STILL here.

A3D, aren't. And nobody cares.

And I'll stand by my statement.
in 1997/1998, NOTHING came close to the SBLive.
It worked, and thats all that mattered.
A3D, was buggy, kept causing soo many problems, had poor drivers and support. Thats why it died. Full Stop !!
