nVidia making .NET driver

YOU HAVE TO SWITCH you driver development to .NET if you want to prepare for Longhorn. ATI was criticised for its new Catalyst Control Center since apart from nice looking features its new driver brought slower execution. But we've learned that Nvidia is doing the same at the moment.

Catalyst Control Center's speed is a problem, more so because it has no settings the Control Panel didn't already offer. Maybe if they'd waited until that new adaptive texture filtering was in it, it wouldn't be so bad, but it's not. All you get now is the same settings, a bigger download & slower performance. |

Crap. I just dumped my 9700 Pro for a 6800 GT. NET was one of the reasons why ! |

Microsoft is developing a new driver framework that will be included with Longhorn, true. Using .NET? No. It is called the Windows Driver Foundation (not to be confused with the Windows Driver Framework) and it still uses C/C++. I'm sure the only thing they are switching over to .NET is the control center (to take advantage of Avalon). |

i myself posted these very comments @ rage3d and driverheaven when right before CCC was even announced... and i told all those stupid people that said they were going to switch to nvidia becase ati made this move, and now look at their dumb faces. i seriously dont understand people... well actually i do, i understand most poeople are DUMB. the info i had was indeed under NDA so their was no official confirmation, but it was very obvious, and still is. |

I don't know anything about the .net stuff, why does everyone hate it so much? |

I don't, works great for me and my 9800 Pro, no problems at all. It could be a little faster in its response, but it'll improve. |

Well, speed is not the only problem. On my PC, when I change a setting in the ATI Control Center, half of the time it just freezes or crashes. |

The drivers are not running on .NET, it's the control panel. And it's not .NET that's responsible for the sluggishness of the CCC, it's the content and coding. All that skinning, built-in 3d-engine and bells and whistles is what makes it slow. Yes, initial startup takes some time since the .NET framework must load the assemblies used by the CCC, but that's a one time affair during a session. Afaik, in Longhorn, .NET is integrated into the OS which will change things a lot. And it'll be .NET 2.0 as well. |

people are just pissy because they have to download microsofts framework i develop in .NET and it is great to use compared to c++ that's messy and prone to memleaks if you dont take much care with your code. even if you develop managed directx9 applications like games, it woll only lose 1-2% of speed compared to native code. i dont know if the control center is geneally slow. on my system it runs fast enough. but if it really runs slow on those peoples system then its not .NET that slows it down. and those changing to nvidia because of the CCC... get a grip .NET is the future on windows. then switch to a unix based system too. |

I'd beg to differ. After all, this is garbage-collected bytecode we're talking about. (I'm tempted to omit 'collected' but that's another matter entirely. |

I was thinking the same thing. I don't know a ton about it, but I certainly don't think much of anything short of sheer performance, price, or compatibility would affect a video card purchase for me. I've owned 3 Nvidia cards in the past (TNT, Geforce, Geforce 3) and currently own a 9800 Pro. I'm not loyal to either company and whichever one gives me the bigger bang for the buck when I'm ready to upgrade is the one I'll use. As for this whole .NET thing -> I'd guess MS is encouraging companies to start using it... |

1-2%?! Are you kidding? Try running a C#/C++ D3D sample pair next time. |
