What grabbed my eye was most specifically the water test and the displacement mapping test. With a little bit of tweaking, using vertex shaders for water in that manner could provide the most realistic water ever. I mean sure, water looks realistic as it is currently via pixel shaders. But that's the key, *LOOKS* realistic. VS can be used to make it ACT realistically. What grabs my attention most about displacement mapping is the way it could be used in certain games to add more detail to certain items. Trees for example, could take on a life of their own by being able to have realistic looking bark. Brick walls could have subtle raised brick surfaces, with the greatest of ease. The possibilities are endless and I really hope that some of these features be used in future video games. It's a shame ATI doesn't support them. AFAIK Displacement mapping requires VS3.0. |

I'm a little confused.. my radeon 9700 pro is only just now getting towards it's limits (far cry) so i do wonder as to when PS3.0 is going to be relevant... Six months, a year? Longer? |
