Norton Subscription Services

Here's a new one from Norton trying rip you the customer?

I just tried to renew my Norton Subscription Services for Norton Internet Security and Norton Anti-Virus and to my dismay I was told that the products that I bought 2 years ago are now obsolete and I should buy Norton Internet Security 2003 which includes Norton Anti-Virus 2003 because the person on the phone tells me that the latest viruses can attack your PC and disable it unless I have their 2003 products? Hehe even thought I can updated may Subscription Services from their website. all I rang upto ask was the £17.53 plus tax did it include the Anti-Virus updates apart from Internet Security updates.

Update Looks like my produt is obsolete after all and so are the following products:

and when I asked to speak to a supervisor he put the phone down on me! customer services @ there best LOL? Have you had the same problems

Update I am on the phone to Norton! it's been 20 mins and I am still waiting for a Norton customer services person to pick up the phone....If I am late posting the news blame Norton

Norton AntiVirus 2001 Professional Edition Norton AntiVirus 2001 for Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME Norton AntiVirus 2000 for Windows 95/98/NT/2000 Norton Internet Security 2001 Family Edition 3.0 Norton Internet Security 2001 3.0 Norton Internet Security 2001 Family Edition 2.5 Norton Internet Security 2001 2.5 Norton Internet Security 2000 - Family Edition 2.0 Norton Internet Security 2000 2.0 Norton Internet Security 2000 Norton Personal Firewall 2001 3.0 Norton Personal Firewall 2001 2.5 for Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000 Norton Personal Firewall 2000 2.x Norton SystemWorks 2001 4.0 Standard Edition Norton SystemWorks 2001 4.0 Professional Edition Norton SystemWorks 2000

So what this means is that all the products that I just mention will no longer have Subscription Services that you can buy or Make a deinstall and clean install of your Norton product as Degger put's it but that won't work either I've tried and If it wasn't for me having to phone them I would have bought the Subscription Services only for it not to work! then you would ring Norton customer services to be told that they no longer support your product and you need to upgrade to 2003! Not a nice way to do buniess Norton.

Don't be so cheap. You can find NIS 2003 on the Internet or at a local discount store. In this latest version, it blocks pop-up ads, as well as unwanted advertisements. Plus, it has a better AV engine. The only drawback I found was that it clashes with Creative Labs Remote Control program. But all you have to do is remove it from starting in msconfig, and then put a shortcut to RCMAN.exe on your desktop, and when your system has fully booted, just double click on the RCMAN icon to get Remote functionality.

Good feedback on RCMAN. I recently picked up this toy from Creative for 10 bucks. Thanks

Heck, do a pricewatch search. You can get NAV2003 with a 1year subscription for like $10-$11 from good companies. Which if you think about it is cheaper than the subscription.

I updated a subsciption of Norton Antivirus 2001 about three weeks ago with no trouble, so I don't think that info is 100% accurate unless something drastic has changed since then.

Hmm...I don't get this.
I Purchased Norton System Works 2000 when it first hit the store shelves.
To this day I can still update using" live update".
Covers all...virus def's program updates, etc.
I have never purchased a subsciption for anything.
Of course i have never registered the product either.
I know Symantec Started charging a subsciption fee,
not sure why it has not affected me.

All of the AV companies were directed to charge a fee for virus definition updates by the SEC as the result of an 'investor' * lawsuit about lost potential profits.

* By investor I mean a dude who makes his living by buying 1 share in a company and then suing them.

I believe there was a bug (exploit) with previous versions of Norton AV that allowed malicous code to disable the Norton engine and then infect the computer with whatever virus the coder wanted.

I assume that a LiveUpdate patch would have dealt with that but one never knows.

I have SystemWorks 2001 and it is true that Symantec now refuses to provide live TECH SUPPORT for that product (you can't even pay for it, if you wanted to), but the subscription service for NAV is still available (I just renewed mine for a year last month, before I knew better) and LiveUpdate still runs and updates everything as before. Apparently, all possible technical problems have already occurred and been fully documented in their FAQ's (NOT). I think it's very lame of them to abandon support of a product only 2 years old, and I may just switch to a competitor's product because of their idiotic decision. Customer friendly, they are not. I'll run what I have until this subscription runs out and then go elsewhere.
