New NVIDIA Driver Generation: Shader performance

Digit-Life have thrown up a 1 page editorial called New NVIDIA Driver Generation: Shader performance! which looks at the performance of pixel shaders 2.0 on NV3X based solutions!
NVIDIA's new drivers (v50.XX and higher) include enhanced and optimized compilers of vertex and pixel shaders, support for new texture formats and some other optimizations that do not affect image quality but foster the rendering speed.
In this express test we will compare performance of drivers v40 and v50 to reveal how optimized the vertex and pixel shaders are in the new driver generation. We tested an average-level card based on the GeForce FX 5600 Ultra 128 MB clocked at standard core and memory frequencies. As usual, we used the latest release of the DirectX 9 and the Windows XP Professional OS.

no comment yet? I would have at least expected a "the GFFX will never attain Radeon 9x00 PS speed!" from our local troll... |

I can think of a few trolls on here, but i doubt its who you think. Funny that as soon as the nvidiots on here have no argument they start insulting and avoiding previous postings.. Oh well. Ok so nvidia has improved PS2 speed, but how come the games that use it have gained more speed than those graphs suggest? Could it be that the FX isnt using PS2 at all, but PS1.1 or 1.3 instead ? no never... |

Hinkle is quite clearly not interested in valid discussion. He has no argument so he insults those how know more than him. Come on then, once and for all PROVE that the NV3x is faster than or as fast at PS2.0 as the R3x0. PROVE that there are no cheats/hacks in the drivers. Tell us how the nv3x is so great... If you can’t id suggest you either shut up or grow up. People like you have turned rage 3D and nvnews into a flame fest, because you post lies and insults. Don’t turn this great site into the same mess. |

For the last time...it's a DX9 wrapper! So, that makes me the local troll? >=) |

Sure is a wrapper.. and it does an ok job, but its still not the real thing. I really hope the XGI cards shut the nvidiots up, they are so misguided, maybe we should club together and get some therapy for them ?! Why do the new 52.13s reduce ALL AF to bilinear ? Why is it that the wrapper that allowed dawn to run on the Radeon made it faster than on the FX, but the wrapper of the FX runs DX9 slower than the radeon ? |

I liked the article and thought it was very well done, 'cept I would have liked to see some image quality comparisons. The shader performance increase is very realistic and about what I thought nVidia could get....but they still ain't up to ATi's shader performance by a looooong shot. |

I read somewhere that some guys hacked the monkey demo to make it run on FX cards.....the only thing they say is that it don't run as smooth on FX cards. Guess that backfired. Yeah...it's amazing that DAWN via a wrapper runs smoother and arguably looks better in R300 than in their native hardware. |

You dont need a hacked version to run the ATi demo on an FX, just download from the ATi site and it install and away you go. Run perfectly "smooth" wit my FX5900U on 45.33 dets @ a range of 23 - 52 FPS. Likewise i have run the Dawn Demo on my 9800 Pro and between both cards runin it personally i coud see no diff in IQ quality. |

Actually hinkle is right, the same thing always comes to my mind when I see yet another news about GF FX, there's nearly always a post about ATI's supremacy Now I'm not a FanATIc or an Nvidiot, I see good products on both sides, but hey c'mon, this "war" of the 2 video card manufacturers is getting really boring already. I mean don't you people get tired of posting the same things and thoughts day after another? Remember everyone that we are all one, life is just a dream and there is no pain, it's all in our imagination |

He maybe right.. it is boring, but there is no reason to act like a child, if he doesnt like it he doesnt have to read it ! Ill tell you what is really boring, its nvidia trying to get out of its hole by cheating and lieing. Maybe when they stop it people will stop pointing it out ! By the way if the news is so boring why are the ATI/nvidia articles on here getting 3000+ reads when the other articles are getting less than 1000 ? |

Well if you have a nvidia card it might not be rendering it properly... |

And you do what in real life? Seriously, you still don't understand my position in all this graphiccard flame war, even after so many posts. The fact is, I couldn't care less about which card is faster or slower in PS2.0 or whatever. I do care for games and for graphiccards in general but I'm really not interested in this childish flame war which is happening all over the place. I really wish nvidia would again bring out a decent product and this not because I'm nvidiot but because that would maybe stop all this bashing from ATI users which is filling every graphiccard forum in the world. I'm not interested in whether my card perform 10fps better than any other card or not, I'm interested in having stable drivers for 3dsmax (I work a lot with this prog.) and in being able to play every new game coming out on the market without the need to wait for a new driver revision to fix bugs for the new game I just installed. It's sad that many don't notice that I'm actually making fun of all this graphiccard debacle while on the other side some users here are defending their position as if their life was depending on it... Keep going and will continue to have fun here "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." |

You cant deny that nvidas FX is basically a bit *****-up, can you ? nvidia do have the edge in professional graphics but i dont use those cards for that anyway. I am not attacking nvidia without cause. If they do something good i will say so, but as far as the FX is concerned they havent. You seem to think im worried about FPS, nothing could be further from the truth. Its not about how fast the card is, its about what nvidia are doing in the drivers. THEY are the ones worried about FPS, why have they disabled trilinier filtering totally in the 52.10 and higher ? no other reason than FPS, even in older games which run at 300FPS+ ! ATI drivers are better than nvidias now, some people have trouble but for me the cat 3.8s cause less trouble than the dets. so please dont say the cats are unstable because that is a lie.. I will continue to point out the driver hacks with factual statements, if they are wrong please correct them but dont flame by writing the oposite just to annoy, which it looks like you have been up to now. Reseach you reply first. Didi it occure to you that i write tyhese things because they are true ? Nvidia has cheated, they havent fixed the DX9 in the FX and the image quality is still poor. If they fix it all i will be very happy, i wont have to try to find ways around the FXs limitations when i write games anymore. |

I agree, fanATIcs are much more insulting and flamestarting than nVidiots (actually, I almost only see ATI fans start flames). Same goes with AMD fanboys vs Intel fanboys... and HL2 fanboys vs Doom3 fanboys, etc. I really wonder why...?! My guess its because every 10 year old is now in the internet. |

Maybe you should read around on here and see who is stating facts and who is flaming. By the way it is possible to dislike nvidias tactics and not be an ATI fanboy, it just so happens that right now ATI is the only competition nvidia has. |

I was talking about flaming. and flaming is much more common nowadays than normal fact stating!!! maybe you should look around some more. ATI is also using forced "optimizations" btw... |

Doesn't matter what damn card is technically better or performs slightly better... If its driver crashes Windows every other days, then the product is CRAP. Now be realistic, who has the terrible track record in that regard, hmmmm? (This is in no way taking sides, it's just an expression of statistical fact. lol) |

I gotta admit to that.. I never had a problem with any nVidia card or its drivers up to the GF4... Never got a FX.. But my 8500 is the Anti Christ & my 9700 is a hell of a lot better but ATI really had me totally disqusted with the 8500 to the point that it was many many months of hammering how great the 9700 was before I finally gave in & got 1. |
